Position Summary
The Quality Control (QC) Inspector ensures fabricated steel products meet customer specifications, engineering drawings, applicable codes, and St. George Steel's quality standards. This position performs in-process and final inspections of structural steel, heavy plate fabrication, pressure vessels, ductwork, and other fabricated assemblies while supporting the Company's commitment to Producing Quality, Delivering Excellence, and Providing Service.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform in-process and final inspections of fabricated steel components to verify compliance with engineering drawings, specifications, customer requirements, and applicable industry codes.
- Inspect fit-up, weld preparation, weld quality, dimensions, hole locations, bevels, camber, alignment, and overall workmanship.
- Read and interpret fabrication drawings, shop drawings, blueprints, welding symbols, bills of material, and project specifications.
- Verify material traceability, heat numbers, and certifications as required.
- Conduct dimensional inspections using tape measures, squares, calipers, levels, laser measuring devices, and other precision instruments.
- Inspect painted and coated products for proper surface preparation, coating thickness, coverage, and finish when required.
- Document inspection results and maintain accurate, audit-ready quality records.
- Identify nonconforming products and work with production, engineering, and project management to resolve quality issues.
- Hold authority to withhold release of fabricated products until corrective actions are verified complete; escalate disputed holds to the Quality Manager per the department's escalation process.
- Support customer, third-party, and code inspections as required.
- Maintain compliance with AISC, ASME, AWS, customer, and internal quality standards.
- Promote a culture of safety, quality, continuous improvement, and accountability throughout the fabrication process.
- Participate in root cause investigations and recommend process improvements to reduce defects and rework.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in steel fabrication, welding inspection, quality control, or a related manufacturing environment.
- Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings, blueprints, and welding symbols.
- Strong understanding of steel fabrication processes, including cutting, fitting, welding, machining, and painting.
- Working knowledge of dimensional inspection methods and measuring equipment.
- Strong attention to detail and excellent documentation skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with production employees, supervisors, engineers, and customers.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certified Welding Inspector (AWS CWI), or working toward certification — required for staff performing final weld sign-off on code work where no other CWI is on shift.
- Experience with AISC and ASME quality requirements.
- Experience performing visual weld inspections.
- Familiarity with nondestructive testing (NDT) methods, including ultrasonic testing (UT), magnetic particle testing (MT), dye penetrant testing (PT), or radiographic testing (RT).
- Experience with industrial coatings inspection or NACE certification.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong understanding of quality assurance principles and inspection procedures.
- Ability to identify fabrication defects and recommend corrective actions.
- Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with multiple departments.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office and electronic quality documentation systems.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb, kneel, and lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying temperatures and shop conditions.
- Ability to access elevated work areas using ladders, lifts, or scaffolding.
- Ability to distinguish colors as needed to verify color-coded material markings and evaluate coating/paint finish.
- Ability to perform close visual inspections of welds, fit-up, and finished surfaces.
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, and steel-toed boots.
Work Environment
This position is performed primarily in a heavy industrial fabrication facility. The employee will regularly be exposed to welding operations, grinding, overhead cranes, moving equipment, elevated work platforms, paint operations, and varying noise levels.

A successful QC Inspector consistently:
- Produces accurate and timely inspections.

- Helps maintain compliance with customer requirements and applicable quality certifications.

Pay: $65,000.00 - $75,000.00 per year
