Position Summary
The Traffic Signal Electrician ensures public safety by the continuous maintenance, rapid repair, and inspection of the County traffic signal system. This position monitors this system for optimum performance through design updates and modifications. Responds to emergency calls on a 24-hour basis. This position reports to the Principal Traffic Signal Electrician.
The Traffic Signal Electrician is designated as essential to the emergency service function and required to assist the division and/or department in meeting the operational needs.
Essential Functions
- Reports to all emergency traffic signal and safety device calls as required (on 24-hour call).
- Responds to non-emergency calls for the repair and maintenance of traffic signals and safety devices.
- Schedules, assigns, and reviews work.
- Implements modifications to existing signals.
- Communicates section functions and needs to supervisors.
- Administers the policies and procedures established by divisional and departmental managers.
- Prepares detailed reports, cost estimates, cost account, and project diaries.
- Reads plans and specifications to carry out responsibilities of the position to ensure compliance with federal, state, and departmental standards.
- Investigates and responds to public/private complaints.
- Operates equipment in a safe and timely manner to ensure the efficient operation of the Division in accordance with Division policies.
- Utilizes DPW Hansen Infrastructure Management System.
- Attends meetings.
- Acts as a liaison between the Traffic Safety Services Division, property owners, residents, and community representatives regarding areas of concern.
- Recommends road maintenance and or repair projects to the supervisor.
- Attends various training seminars and training courses presented by professional instructors to keep abreast of the new safety and work practices established by OSHA.
- Instructs new employees on the procedures followed for repair and maintenance of traffic signals and traffic control devices.
- Performs skilled and unskilled labor to ensure the efficient operation of the division in accordance with departmental and divisional policies.
- Maintains, services, cleans, and makes minor repairs of tools and equipment to ensure it is kept in good mechanical working condition.
- Performs skilled and unskilled labor to ensure the sufficient operation of the division in accordance with division policies.
- Drives trucks and hauls materials and/or equipment to and from projects in a safe and timely manner.
- Performs work zone traffic control to ensure the flow of traffic is not disrupted.
- Performs other related duties in the Department of Public Works as required.
- Uses and maintains hand tools and equipment.
- Attends training to keep abreast of new safety and work practices established by OSHA.
- Uses various electrical and electronics test equipment.
Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Public Works.

Qualifications
Essential
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Thorough knowledge of electrical work, electronics, and construction techniques
- Knowledge of construction and repair techniques, equipment and materials related to traffic control devices
- Must possess a valid NJ driver’s license and commercial Class B driver’s license
- Ability to read blueprints and give verbal instruction
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Two years of experience in electrical and electronics troubleshooting
- Must be well-versed in specifications, regulations, and standards of the NJ DOT National Electrical Code
Preferred
- Sufficient combination of education and experience in electronic and electrical theory and practice to qualify as a journeyman electrician and electronics technician
- Knowledge of Somerset County policies and procedures
Ability to utilize an electronic infrastructure management system

Salary: $50,000/year
