Position Overview
Middle Tree is seeking qualified and experienced part-time staff to provide one-on-one academic support for K–6th students in the Oakland area. Tutoring sessions may take place in-person at students’ homes or online, depending on family preference.
We are specifically looking for highly skilled educators who are confident in independently creating personalized curriculum and instructional plans based on each student’s academic needs, learning style, and goals. Tutors must also be able to assess student performance, monitor progress over time, and adjust instruction accordingly.
The ideal candidate has experience working with students with learning disabilities and diverse learning needs, and is able to adapt teaching methods, pacing, and instructional strategies to support student success.
Credentialed teachers and substitute teachers are strongly preferred.
This is a temporary, part-time assignment based on student enrollment, program needs, and tutor availability.
Responsibilities
- Provide one-on-one tutoring support for elementary or middle school students
- Design and implement personalized lesson plans and curriculum tailored to individual student needs and goals
- Confidently teach and reinforce concepts across core academic subjects
- Create engaging, interactive, and age-appropriate learning activities
- Adapt teaching methods and instructional approaches to support students with learning disabilities and varying academic abilities
- Assess student understanding and adjust instruction to ensure academic growth
- Track student progress, maintain accurate session notes, and collect data related to student performance and goals
- Communicate professionally and effectively with families, students, and program staff regarding progress and concerns
- Utilize a variety of instructional strategies and educational resources to support student success
- Support overall program goals through accurate documentation and progress reporting
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) required
- Degree in Education, English, Child Development, Liberal Studies, or related field preferred
- Credentialed teachers or substitute teachers strongly preferred
- Previous experience working with K–8 students in a tutoring, classroom teaching, or intervention setting required
- Experience working with students with learning disabilities, academic interventions, and differentiated instruction strongly preferred
- Strong understanding of elementary and/or secondary ELA and Math curriculum and instructional strategies
- Ability to independently create personalized curriculum, lesson plans, and intervention strategies
- Ability to confidently assess student needs and track academic progress over time
- Ability to adapt instruction and teaching methods based on student learning styles and needs
- Excellent communication, organization, and interpersonal skills
- Patience, professionalism, flexibility, and a passion for helping students succeed
- Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred but not required
- Background check and TB test required
Schedule / Availability
Preferred availability is between 8:00 AM – 5:30 PM, though tutoring sessions are appointment-based and scheduled according to student needs.
Tutoring sessions may be held in-person or online. In-person session locations vary based on family preference. Tutors will be matched with students based on availability, experience, and subject-area strengths.
