Mission :
The Haven provides a shelter and finds life-long loving homes for abused, homeless, and neglected animals, treating them with love, respect and medical care. Through education and volunteer programs, we promote community awareness of pet over population and responsibility.
The Haven is a non-profit sanctuary for animals that will be cared for regardless of how long it takes to find them loving homes.
Summary:
This is a hands-on, active role responsible for daily animal care, maintaining clean and safe housing areas, facility upkeep, and assisting the public. This position is ideal for individuals who enjoy physical work, staying busy, and making a direct impact on the lives of animals every day.
Essential Duties and Functions:
- Perform daily feeding, watering, and thorough cleaning/sanitization of animal enclosures following established protocols
- Maintain a fast-paced workflow to ensure all animals receive consistent, high-quality care
- Assist with enrichment, socialization, and active handling of animals of varying sizes and energy levels
- Monitor animal behavior, appearance, and activity for signs of illness or discomfort
- Support health monitoring and behavior evaluations
- Operate laundry, dishwashing, and cleaning equipment; maintain overall facility cleanliness and organization
- Work collaboratively with staff, volunteers, and the public while assisting with adoptions
- Guide adopters through safe and positive interactions with animals
- Maintain equipment and report maintenance needs
- Follow all safety procedures and Haven regulations
- Perform other duties as assigned
Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
- Ability to lift, carry, and move up to 50 pounds regularly
- Comfortable performing physically active tasks throughout the shift (lifting, bending, squatting, standing)
- Ability to safely and confidently handle animals of various sizes, temperaments, and strength levels
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, physically demanding environment
- Exposure to cleaning agents, outdoor conditions, and animal allergens
- Potential exposure to animal bites and scratches
- Availability to work weekends and holidays as needed
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED
- Animal care experience preferred, but not required
- Comfortable working directly with animals in a hands-on environment
- Strong work ethic and ability to stay productive in a task-driven setting
- Team-oriented with the ability to work independently when needed
- Clear communication skills and a professional, positive attitude
- Compassionate, patient, and attentive to animal needs
- Valid Alabama Driver’s License
On-the-Job-Training:
- Job proficiency should be attained within six to eight months.
