Bill Wise’s Excavating, Inc. is a growing construction company specializing in slip repair, general earthwork, HDPE and steel fabrication, and pipeline maintenance and integrity services throughout the Appalachian region. The Operator III is a highly skilled heavy equipment operator responsible for safely and efficiently executing complex tasks in support of pipeline, environmental, and site development projects. This role requires advanced experience operating in challenging terrain, including steep slopes, and the ability to work independently while maintaining a strong commitment to safety and equipment care. The Operator III is also expected to provide guidance to less experienced operators, support crew coordination, and contribute to overall jobsite efficiency and productivity.
Required Experience and Skills
- 5+ years of equipment operating experience
- Expert proficiency in operating excavators, bulldozers, side booms, and other industry-related equipment
- Winch operating experience preferred
- Advanced ability to read and interpret site plans, grade stakes, and utility markings
- Strong understanding of safe excavation practices and jobsite safety requirements
- In-depth knowledge of OSHA safety standards and protocols
- Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to diagnose and address mechanical issues in the field
- High level of situational awareness and ability to safely manage work around crews and equipment
- Effective communication skills with the ability to direct and support team members (hand signals, radios, etc.)
- Ability and willingness to mentor less experienced operators
- Willingness to perform general labor duties as needed
- Ability to work in outdoor conditions, including varying weather and terrain
- Strong math skills for measurements, grading, and material estimation
- Valid driver’s license
- Extensive experience operating on steep slopes and uneven terrain
- Posses required General Operator Qualifications (OQs) or ability to obtain quickly
- Must be willing to work occasional overtime and weekends based on project needs
Key Responsibilities
- Operate heavy equipment in a safe, precise, and efficient manner on complex and high-risk job sites
- Lead by example in maintaining safety standards and ensuring compliance with all company and regulatory requirements
- Perform daily pre-operation inspections, complete equipment checklist logbooks, maintain cleanliness of equipment, and conduct routine field maintenance
- Submit all daily reports and inspections in Viber
- Execute and oversee tasks such as repairing slips, installing pipelines, building well pads, land clearing, and supporting environmental compliance projects
- Assist with jobsite planning, equipment coordination, and workflow optimization
- Communicate and coordinate effectively with crew members, supervisors, and other operators
