Independence, Inc. , a community-based, private nonprofit Center for Independent Living (CIL), is seeking an Independent Living Specialist with a demonstrated commitment to the Independent Living philosophy and practice of assisting and advocating for individuals with disabilities who wish to live an independent lifestyle in the setting of their choice.
Some general responsibilities include providing independent living skills (ILS) training, conducting outreach, providing peer support, housing and transition services, assisting with consumer-identified independent living goals and providing individual advocacy. This position works directly with consumers and is expected to direct his/her work complementary to the spirit and intent of the independent living philosophy. The Core Services Manager supervises the individual in this position.
Some qualifications include:
- Bachelor's Degree in related field and/or related work experience
- Demonstrated commitment to the philosophy of independent living, including consumer control, peer support, self-determination, equal access, and individual and systems advocacy
- Familiarity with a range of independent living skills and ability to teach others such skills
- Knowledge of and ability to work with community resources in Jefferson, Douglas and Franklin counties
- Experience with problem-solving and developing/implementing individualized goal plans
- Creative planner with good organization and documentation skills
- willingness to occassionally work felxible hours if needed to accommodate consumer appointments or community events
