Butter Beans provides nutritious, wholesome meals for charter schools, private schools, and summer camps throughout the New York City and tri-state area. Butter Beans seeks like minded individuals to support our school cafeteria service team. This position of Sous Chef reports to the Executive Chef. This is a seasonal position that follows the school calendar year.
Schedule:
-Shift times start between 6:00 AM and 7:00 AM, Monday - Friday, with the shift ending between 2:30pm and 3:30 PM, 33 to 40 hours per week
-Position begins in mid-August
-Our team members are off when their schools are closed for holidays or other events. This is a seasonal position with the opportunity to work at one of our activity camps during the summer.
Responsibilities
- Assist the Executive Chef/Food Service Director in planning, preparing, and serving daily breakfast, lunch, and special event meals.
- Ensure all food preparation and kitchen operations comply with kosher dietary laws and certification requirements.
- Supervise and train kitchen staff in food preparation, sanitation, safety procedures, and kosher practices.
- Monitor food quality, presentation, portion control, and meal consistency.
- Assist with inventory management, ordering, receiving, and proper storage of food and supplies.
- Maintain separation of meat, dairy, and pareve equipment, utensils, and food products as required by kosher standards.
- Ensure compliance with local health department regulations and food safety standards.
- Help develop nutritious, child-friendly menus that meet school nutrition guidelines.
- Oversee kitchen cleanliness and sanitation throughout the facility.
- Assist in scheduling staff and coordinating daily kitchen workflow.
Requirements
- Food Handler's Certification is required
- Minimum 3 years of experience in food service management.
- Knowledge of kosher food preparation and kitchen practices required.
- Understanding of food safety, sanitation, and HACCP principles.
- Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
