Roadway Mechanic
The Belt Railway Company of Chicago (BRC) is currently seeking a skilled and motivated Roadway Mechanic to join our team. This position plays a critical role in maintaining and repairing the heavy-duty equipment used to construct and sustain our railway infrastructure.
Roadway Mechanics focus on the off-track equipment that supports track work and maintenance. This is a hands-on role in a small-team environment, requiring independence, technical skill, and a strong commitment to safety.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform maintenance and repair on off-track equipment, such as excavators, cranes, and hydraulic systems.
- Service diesel engines, transmissions, and related components.
- Diagnose and repair electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic system issues.
- Perform welding and fabrication work to maintain or repair equipment parts.
- Operate heavy-duty service trucks, including truck-mounted cranes and pull trailers.
- Adhere to all railroad safety regulations, including FRA requirements.
- Work independently as well as part of a small, collaborative team.
- Be available for on-call assignments and weekend work as necessary.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Several years of experience as a mechanic, preferably at the journeyman level.
- Welding experience strongly preferred.
- Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), or ability to obtain one upon hire.
- Must pass a physical examination and a drug screen, including testing for marijuana, as a safety-sensitive employee.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Comfortable working solo and in small-team settings.
- Willingness to travel locally as needed.

Pay: $35.00 - $42.00 per hour
