JOB TITLE: Machine Operator
DEPARTMENT: Production
REPORTS TO: Production Supervisor / Lead Operator
FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt
POSITION SUMMARY
The Machine Operator is responsible for the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of production equipment used in the rendering, refining, deodorizing, and packaging of edible oils and fats such as lard and tallow. This role plays a key part in maintaining product quality, meeting production goals, and supporting continuous improvement efforts in a food manufacturing environment.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Production Operation
- Operate, monitor, and adjust machinery including cookers, grinders, expellers, votators, metal detectors, box erectors, fillers, closers, labelers, and palletizers.
- Perform setup, cleaning, and basic troubleshooting of equipment to minimize downtime.
- Monitor flow, temperature, pressure, and speed of production lines; adjust settings to meet product specifications.
- Coordinate oil flow with Tank Farm and Refinery Operators to ensure proper supply and quality.
- Conduct visual inspections and remove defective product or packaging.
Quality & Compliance
- Follow Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) and ensure product meets USDA, FDA, BRC, and Cal-OSHA regulatory standards.
- Pull samples during processing and assist with lab testing when required.
- Document process parameters, failures, and corrective actions.
- Maintain accurate inventory logs and production counts.
Sanitation & Maintenance
- Conduct sanitation checks and basic preventative maintenance such as lubrication, gasket replacement, and filter changes.
- Coordinate with maintenance for major equipment repairs and troubleshooting.
- Maintain cleanliness of work area and comply with plant sanitation schedules.
Material Handling
- Operate powered industrial trucks and electric pallet jacks to transport materials.
- Supply production lines with necessary materials (boxes, wrap, labels, etc.).
- Load and unload raw materials and finished goods from tanks, totes, and trailers as needed.
Team Collaboration & Training
- Train new operators on equipment use, safety procedures, and quality protocols.
- Communicate line performance metrics and process concerns to leadership.
- Participate in continuous improvement and safety initiatives.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- 6–12 months of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Work is performed in both office and production plant settings.
- Conditions may include exposure to humidity, extreme temperatures, mechanical equipment, airborne particles, and chemicals.
- Noise levels vary and may be loud in the production area.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, and crouching.
- Ability to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.
- Regular use of hands, fingers, wrists, and arms.
- Visual requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
- Prolonged periods of standing or sitting as needed.
Pay: $20.00 - $22.00 per hour
