Seaside Charter Schools (SSC) embrace the whole child – Head, Heart, and Hands – through an education that integrates each child’s creative, intellectual, emotional, physical, and social domains. Seaside employs an interdisciplinary liberal arts program inspired by Waldorf principles where art, music, and movement are integrated with core academic instruction. Seaside was the first established (and now also the largest) public Waldorf institution in the Southeast USA.
The Invention Representative for Exceptional Student Education at Seaside Charter will assist school, District personnel and parents in the development of appropriate alternative behavioral strategies and utilization of community agencies in disciplinary action involving students.
- Provide direct, immediate assistance requested by school personnel and parents involving suspension or expulsion of students.
- Develop and teach preventative strategies and alternative actions for use by administrators, teachers and parents to reduce student misconduct both at school and in the home.
- Coordinate activities with school personnel and parents of exceptional students regarding suspension and expulsion procedures.
- Serve as Chairperson for Conduct Review Committee Proceedings.
- Serve as liaison between Exceptional Student Education program, community agencies (HRS and Juvenile Justice) and parents in providing maximum assistance and resources for exceptional students, including implementation of alternative delivery systems.
- Ensure psychosocial and behavioral data has been gathered and maintained on assigned students by coordinating with parents, district staff and community mental health professionals.
- Advocate on behalf of exceptional students and their parents ensuring all procedural safeguards.
- Make home visits as necessary for evaluating the student in need.
- Assist in identifying students who appear to need a change in their placement in the program, further evaluation and educational programming or support services.
- Deliver in-service training to school personnel on behavior management for disruptive students.
- Supervise students to protect the students from conditions harmful to learning and/or to the student's mental health, physical health and/or safety.
- Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
- Maintain accurate records as required by law, District policy and administrative regulation.
- Assist SSC administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct.
- Participate in Child Student Team activities.
- Attend staff meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
- Maintain teaching day schedule of 8 AM to 3:45 PM and evening/weekend as scheduled.
- Attend mid-August and End of Year meetings.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in related field, Master's degree preferred
- Five years of successful teaching or work experience with exceptional student education
- Background in behavior management techniques strongly recommended
- Florida Department of Education Teaching Certificate in at least one area of Exceptional Student Education, Administration/Supervision or Educational Leadership required
- Knowledge of Public Waldorf pedagogy
- Working knowledge of DCSPS exceptional student education policies and procedures
