The Head Custodian is responsible for maintaining a safe, sanitary, and highly functional physical environment for students, staff, and the community. This role directs and coordinates the daily activities of the junior high custodial staff, oversees inventory and equipment, manages facility security (including opening/closing procedures), and ensures the building is prepared for daily educational operations and special events. he job of Head Custodian, Junior High School was established for the purpose/s of maintaining an attractive, sanitary and safe facility for students, staff and public; providing equipment and furniture arrangements for meetings, classroom activities and events; minimizing property damage, loss and liability exposure; ensuring that assignments are completed in a safe, proper and timely manner and overseeing assigned part-time custodians in the performance of their assignments.
Leadership & Supervision
Direct, train, and schedule junior high custodial staff (full-time and part-time/sweepers) to ensure consistent, high-quality facility care.
Conduct regular inspections of the building and grounds to ensure cleanliness, safety, and compliance with health regulations.
Assist in evaluating the performance of building custodial staff and reporting performance metrics to building administration.
Facility Maintenance & Operations
Perform routine and deep-cleaning tasks across classrooms, restrooms, gymnasiums, cafeterias, and common areas.
Execute basic preventative maintenance on building systems (HVAC filter changes, boiler checks, basic plumbing, and minor electrical repairs like bulb/ballast replacement).
Coordinate and execute seasonal deep cleaning projects, including floor stripping, waxing, and carpet extraction during summer and winter breaks.
Manage the inventory of cleaning supplies, paper products, and maintenance equipment; submit purchase requests within the allocated building budget.
Safety, Security & Event Coordination
Manage building security, including unlocking the facility for the start of the school day, securing all doors and windows at night, and managing the building alarm system.
Maintain exterior grounds for safety, including immediate snow and ice removal from walkways and entryways prior to the start of the school day.
Coordinate the setup and teardown of seating, tables, and equipment for school assemblies, sporting events, community meetings, and emergency drills.
Respond to immediate facility emergencies (e.g., spills, bodily fluids, broken glass, plumbing leaks) swiftly and in accordance with district safety protocols.

Arranges and supervises the arrangement of furnishings and equipment for the purpose of providing adequate preparations for assemblies, lunchroom, meetings, classroom activities, and special events. Chairs risk management committee and serves on other school committees as may be required for the purpose of conveying information and/or receiving information. Cleans and supervises the cleaning of the school facilities (e.g. classrooms, offices, restrooms, multipurpose rooms, grounds, snow removal, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary, safe and attractive environment.

Coordinates scheduled special events, meetings, community functions, etc. (e.g. records hours facility used, custodial hours required, equipment used, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring availability of facilities and/or equipment and providing information required for billing.

Delivers various items (e.g. supplies, mail, packages, furniture, etc.) for the purpose of distributing materials to the appropriate parties.

Directs assistant head custodian, part-time custodial personnel and substitute staff for the purpose of maximizing the efficiency of the work force, assisting in performance evaluations, and meeting shift requirements.

Inspects school facilities for the purpose of ensuring that the site is suitable for safe operations, maintained in an attractive and clean condition, and performing necessary minor repairs due to vandalism, equipment breakage, weather conditions, etc. and/or referring to other district personnel for resolution.

Maintains supplies and equipment (e.g. cleaning solutions, paper products, vacuums, mops, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of items required to properly maintain facilities.

Performs fire drills for the purpose of ensuring that staff and students are familiar with emergency procedures.

Prepares documentation (e.g. work schedules, work orders, requisitions, budget requests, etc.) for the purpose of providing written support and/or conveying information.

Prepares facility for daily operations (e.g. opening gates, building access doors, disarming security systems, heaters, repairs, snow removal, programs bell systems, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring school facilities are operational and safe for occupancy.

Repairs furniture, doors, hangs blackboards, emergency repairs, replace filters, ceiling, walls, etc. for the purpose of ensuring the safe and efficient utilization of space.

Physical presence at the worksite is an essential function of this position. The role requires in-person collaboration, direct interaction with team members, other staff, students, and/or guardians, and access to on-site equipment and resources.

Knowledge
Sanitation & Hygiene: Comprehensive understanding of commercial cleaning methods, sanitization protocols, and infection control (especially critical for middle school locker rooms, cafeterias, and restrooms).
Chemical Safety: Knowledge of safe handling, mixing, and storage of industrial cleaning chemicals, including strict adherence to Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and OSHA regulations.
Equipment Maintenance: Understanding of the operation and basic maintenance of heavy-duty cleaning equipment (e.g., auto-scrubbers, floor buffers, carpet extractors, power washers).
Facility Operations: Basic working knowledge of building systems, including HVAC controls, plumbing shut-offs, electrical panels, and security/alarm systems.
Skills
Leadership & Supervision: Ability to train, direct, and motivate evening custodial staff, ensuring quality control and completion of assigned zones.
Technical Cleaning: Proficiency in hard floor care (stripping, waxing, buffing) and carpet care (spotting, extracting).
Minor Maintenance: Skill in performing basic preventative maintenance and minor repairs (e.g., changing light bulbs, fixing locker jams, adjusting desks, plunging toilets).
Communication & Tech: Basic computer skills to manage electronic work order systems, submit inventory requests, and communicate via email with the Head Custodian and school administration.

Adaptability & Problem-Solving: The ability to rapidly prioritize tasks during emergencies (e.g., sudden spills, plumbing leaks, post-event cleanups) while managing the regular workflow.
De-escalation & Demeanor: The patience and professionalism required to interact safely and positively with middle school students, staff, and after-school community groups.
Attention to Detail: The ability to consistently identify maintenance needs, safety hazards (like trip hazards or broken glass), and security breaches (unlocked doors/windows) during the evening lockdown.
Self-Direction: The ability to work efficiently with minimal direct supervision once the administrative staff leaves the building.
Physical Demands
Continuous Movement: Must be able to stand, walk, and maneuver for the duration of an 8-hour shift, often on hard surfaces (concrete, tile, gymnasium floors).
Heavy Lifting: Regular requirement to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds unassisted (e.g., trash bags, chemical drums, furniture, bleachers). Occasional lifting of up to 100 pounds with assistance.
Agility & Flexibility: Frequent bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, and reaching above the shoulders.
Climbing: Ability to safely ascend and descend step ladders and extension ladders to replace lighting, clean windows, or access roof hatches.
Environmental Conditions
Hazardous Exposure: Regular handling of commercial cleaning chemicals, disinfectants, and occasional exposure to bodily fluids/bloodborne pathogens (requiring proper PPE).
Climate & Weather: Frequent exposure to loud noises (e.g., floor machinery, boiler rooms, crowded gymnasiums) and occasional exposure to extreme outdoor weather when handling trash removal, snow shoveling, or groundskeeping.
Shift Realities: Primarily an afternoon/evening position. May require occasional overtime, weekend work for sporting events/dances, or on-call availability for snow removal and building emergencies.
