Live and Teach in the Bolivian Amazon
Are you passionate about education, conservation, and cultural exchange? Join Sustainable Bolivia, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization working alongside local communities in the Bolivian Amazon to support ecotourism, regenerative agriculture, environmental conservation, health, and education.
Based at our research station on the beautiful Aquicuana Reserve, you'll have the unique opportunity to live in the Amazon while inspiring the next generation through hands-on environmental education and English instruction.
About the Role
We are seeking an enthusiastic teacher to lead our after-school education program in the nearby community of Warnes. Working with children ages 5–15, you'll create engaging lessons that foster curiosity, creativity, and confidence.
Classes are held Monday through Friday from 2:00–5:00 PM, with attendance typically ranging from 10–30 students per day.
While English language instruction is a core component of the program, we encourage lessons that integrate science, environmental education, and experiential learning.
Examples of activities include:
- English language lessons
- Environmental science activities
- Arts and crafts
- Structured games and outdoor play
- Music (if within your skill set)
- Community clean-up projects
- Bird counts and nature observations
- Other creative, hands-on learning experiences
Morning hours are available for lesson planning and preparation. Volunteers are also welcome to become involved in other projects at the reserve, including:
- Ecological research
- Grant writing
- Social media and communications
- Community outreach
- Other conservation initiatives based on your interests and skills
Throughout the year, short-term volunteers may join the education program. The teacher will play an important role in welcoming these volunteers and helping incorporate them into classroom activities.
Qualifications
We're looking for someone who has:
- Experience working with children or in youth education
- Native or fluent English proficiency
- Intermediate Spanish skills (or higher)
- Creativity, flexibility, and enthusiasm for teaching in a multicultural environment
- An interest in conservation, sustainability, or community development
Commitment
A minimum commitment of three months is required. Preference will be given to applicants who are available for longer placements, as continuity greatly benefits our students and community.
