Sojourner House, Inc. is a homeless shelter for families located in Roxbury. Families are referred through the Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities (EOHLC). At full capacity, the shelter serves up to nine families at a time. After families secure permanent housing, Sojourner House continues to offer stabilization services for up to two years.
Job Summary:
The Shelter Support position is essential to the daily operations of the shelter. The ideal candidate is responsible for maintaining a safe, structured, and supportive environment while ensuring guests comply with Sojourner House rules and the Uniform Shelter Rules. This position works closely with the Case Manager and reports to the Operations Manager.
The ideal candidate is flexible and available to work a variety of shifts, including weekends and holidays, as needed. This position is an excellent opportunity for someone who is retired, semi-retired, or seeking to supplement their income with a meaningful part-time position.
Responsibilities:
- Provide direct care to shelter families from a trauma informed approach
- Ensure the safety and security of the shelter and all guests
- Verbally articulate and enforce shelter policies and procedures
- Accurately record and document all relevant guest and shelter information
- Assist with the intake of new families entering shelter
- Answer phone, greet visitors and community partners
- Keep the front office clean, organized, and presentable
- Conduct routine rounds
- Monitor and ensure completion of assigned chores by guests
- Monitor and track inventory and supplies during shifts
- Mediate and de-escalate conflicts in a calm and respectful manner
- Implement emergency procedures and have a continued awareness of situations that may have the potential to escalate
- Maintain a high level of professionalism and appropriate boundaries with guests at all times
- Attend required meetings and trainings
Qualifications
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Attention to detail
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to multitask
- Punctual and reliable
- Experience (1-2 years) working in the Human Services field
- Bilingual skills and basic knowledge of Uniform Shelter Rules is a plus
- Team player, positive attitude, proactive and sense of humor
Physical Requirements: Ability to stand, sit, bend, climb stairs, walk, and carry items as needed
Pay: From $17.25 per hour
