About Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad
Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Co. & Museum is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and operating historic two-foot gauge railroad equipment for the education and enjoyment of the public. We operate scenic and special event trains along Portland’s Eastern Promenade, including our busy holiday season and The Polar Express™ Train Ride.
We are looking for a dependable, safety-focused, and guest-friendly Train Conductor to join our seasonal train crew.
Position Summary
The Train Conductor is responsible for safe passenger train operations, onboard guest communication, boarding, crowd control, and coordination with the Engineer and other crew members. This is a safety-sensitive position that requires strong judgment, clear communication, and the ability to remain calm and professional in public-facing situations.
This role does not include formal staff supervision, but the Conductor has operational authority over train movements, passenger safety, onboard procedures, and crew communication during assigned train operations.
Key Responsibilities
Train operations:
- Serve as Conductor on historic passenger trains.
- Coordinate with the Engineer to ensure safe train movements.
- Serve as the primary safety and communication authority during push movements.
- Perform and document pre-departure checks.
- Monitor passengers, crew, equipment, and surroundings for safety.
- Take immediate action to address unsafe conditions, including stopping operations when needed.
- Follow all railroad safety rules, internal procedures, and crew instructions.
Guest experience:
- Welcome and assist passengers of all ages and backgrounds.
- Support safe boarding, riding, and unloading.
- Communicate clearly with guests during the trip.
- Help create a professional, educational, and memorable visitor experience.
- Respond to guest questions or concerns with courtesy and good judgment.
General support:
- Assist with minor facility or operations tasks when not assigned to train crew.
- Work outdoors in changing weather conditions.
- Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor while representing the organization.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to remain calm, professional, and safety-focused under pressure.
- Strong judgment and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently with limited direct supervision.
- Valid U.S. driver’s license.
- Legal authorization to work in the United States.
- Ability to work weekends, holidays, and variable schedules.
- Ability to stand for extended periods, climb steps, work around railroad equipment, and lift 50 to 75 pounds.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior railroad, transportation, safety, public safety, military, maritime, tourism, hospitality, museum, or event operations experience preferred, though railroad experience is not required.
- Experience in a public-facing role.
- Interest in history, preservation, transportation, or nonprofit work.
Schedule
This is a full-time seasonal position through December 31, 2026. The schedule varies based on train operations and events. Weekend, holiday, and some evening availability is required, especially during summer, fall, and holiday operations.
Pay
$22.00 to $30.00 per hour, depending on experience and aptitude.
