Child Care Teacher Requirements
A child care teacher is responsible for planning, leading, and supervising daily activities for a group of children.
To be a child care teacher, a person must:
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Have a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Have at least 80 full days or 120 half days of experience as an assistant child care teacher in a licensed child care center or approved early childhood setting.
- Complete the required early childhood education training before becoming a teacher. This can include one of the following:
- Two department-approved non-credit early childhood education courses.
- Two college-level early childhood education courses.
- At least 48 college credits, including 3 credits in early childhood education.
- A one-year child care diploma.
- An associate degree in early childhood education or child care.
- A bachelor's degree in education or a Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction teaching license.
Note: The two approved non-credit courses are Introduction to the Child Care Profession and Skills and Strategies for the Child Care Teacher.

Pay: $16.00 - $18.00 per hour
