As a Metrology Technician (CMM) at our Extreme Precision Optics location in Richmond, CA, you will be responsbile for supporting high-precision dimensional inpsection, CMM operations, and metrology activities for complex optical components and assemblies. This is a 2nd shift position with core hours of 2:20pm to 10:30pm.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Set up, validate, and operate Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs) using software such as Zeiss CALYPSO, Hexagon PC-DMIS, QUINDOS, or equivalent metrology platforms.
- Perform first article, in-process, receiving, and final dimensional inspections, verify product conformance to drawings, specifications, and geometric tolerances (interpreting and applying Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) requirements in accordance with ASME/ANSI Y14.5.)
- Analyze inspection data, identify dimensional trends or nonconformances.
- Collaborate and communicate results with Manufacturing, Quality, Engineering, and Planning teams to ensure product conformance, process control, and on-time delivery.
- Document inspection results, maintain accurate quality records, and generate clear inspection reports in approved company formats.
- Support root cause analysis, corrective actions, and continuous improvement initiatives related to measurement methods, inspection accuracy, and process capability.
- Support fixturing concepts and collaborate with mechanical design, manufacturing, and engineering teams to support reliable and repeatable measurement setups.
- Maintain CMM equipment readiness by following calibration, verification, housekeeping, and basic troubleshooting practices.
- Follow all safety, quality, and compliance requirements while supporting production priorities and on-time delivery commitments.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Minimum of 5 years of related precision manufacturing, dimensional inspection, quality, or metrology experience.
- 4 years of experience programming and operating CMM equipment (Brown & Sharpe, Leitz and/or Zeiss preferred), experience with Zeiss CALYPSO and/or Hexagon Metrology PC-DMIS/QUINDOS software.
- Thorough understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) in accordance with ASME/ANSI Y14.5
- Strong skill level for reading and interpreting technical drawings, customer specifications, working with 3D solid CAD models, and strong math skills
- Experience performing high-accuracy dimensional inspections using manual and automated measurement tools, including micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, height gauges, depth micrometers, profilometers, optical comparators, and related equipment.
- Strong math, analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills with high attention to detail.
- Ability to identify measurement issues, validate results, recognize nonconforming conditions, and communicate findings in a clear and timely manner.
- Experience using manual measuring tools such as dial indicators, calipers, micrometers, depth micrometers, profilometers, optical comparators.
- Working knowledge of lean manufacturing practices with a strong commitment to safety and precision-level quality.
- Highly organized, detail oriented with strong ownership, accountability for technical issues and challenges.
- Strong computer aptitude, ability to use MS Word and Excel
- Driven to achieve with the ability to take initiative, and flexible with shifting priorities.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience supporting precision optics, aerospace, semiconductor, defense, medical device, or other high-tolerance manufacturing environments.
- Experience with first article inspection, process capability studies, measurement system analysis, gage repeatability and reproducibility, or statistical process control.
- Knowledge of ISO 9001, AS9100, ISO 13485, or similar quality management system requirements.
- Experience developing repeatable fixturing and measurement strategies for complex or delicate components.
- Metrology, quality, GD&T, or CMM programming certification is a plus.
