Job Purpose
The Hartsbrook School is seeking an experienced and dynamic woodwinds and brass teacher who has interest in directing a beginning to intermediate Middle School Winds Ensemble which may incorporate a few percussionists. This is a new ensemble offering in our music elective programing and we are excited to work with this candidate to grow this ensemble over time. Students at Hartsbrook begin playing ensemble music and building music literacy skills in grades one through three through the use of a series of wooden flutes, pentatonic lyres, pitched tone pipes, and harmonic singing. In grades four and five, all students learn to play a violin, viola, or cello and form class string ensembles. In grades six through eight, students are given the choice to elect which type of instrumental ensemble they would like to participate in. These mixed grade ensembles build on the musicianship students already possess and challenge them to utilize and grow that musicianship further. The skills they refine in these middle school ensembles are then utilized in their high school ensembles, which include Jazz Ensemble, Vocal Ensemble, and Orchestra. It is our hope that students from the middle school winds ensemble will be able to join either the high school orchestra or jazz ensemble when their time comes to step up into the high school. The Hartsbrook School Winds Teacher creates an intentionally inclusive classroom culture,
providing instruction for beginning wind instruments for grades six through eight. Classes meet twice a week for forty five minutes each, with two concerts each year. The Wind
Teacher will provide a quality experience for a diverse group of students that reflects an understanding of a developmental approach, as well as connects the contents of the curriculum to our mission and values. A possibility for augmenting this position may include teaching the high school jazz ensemble class three times per week. Teaching music at Hartsbrook also provides candidates opportunities to teach private lessons or small group classes after school for additional compensation.
