Duties and Responsibilities
1. *Design, develop, deploy, and maintain AI-powered applications that advance the law school's educational mission and operational effectiveness, in alignment with the University of Hawaii's systemwide AI strategy.
2. *Advise the Dean, faculty, and staff on AI capabilities, risks, and opportunities as they affect legal education, institutional operations, and compliance with evolving professional conduct rules governing AI use in legal practice.
3. *Monitor developments in AI and legal technology, identifying emerging capabilities and risks relevant to the law school's mission and to UH¿s systemwide AI initiatives.
4. *Benchmark AI models and tools against legal tasks, producing findings that inform the law school's tool adoption decisions, contribute to scholarly understanding, and support UH's broader AI research mission.
5. *Design and deliver educational experiences that develop students' capacity to work effectively and critically with AI tools in legal contexts, addressing the competency expectations of employers and the requirements of professional conduct rules.
6. *Develop and pilot courses, workshops, and training modules that integrate AI into legal education - including simulated practice environments, AI-assisted research methods, and critical evaluation of AI-generated legal work.
7. *Collaborate with faculty on incorporating AI tools and methods into existing courses, providing technical support and pedagogical guidance informed by expertise in both AI systems and the teaching of professional judgment.
8. *Support students in understanding what AI can and cannot do in legal reasoning, research, and document production, fostering the critical perspective necessary for responsible professional use.
9. *Investigate AI legal reasoning through educational programs designed to simultaneously develop student professional judgment and generate data on how AI systems handle legal analysis - contributing to the emerging field of AI evaluation in professional domains.
10. *Develop AI-driven learning environments where law students develop professional judgment, AI literacy, and technological competence through structured interaction with AI systems, preparing graduates for AI-transformed legal practice.
11. *Conduct applied research on AI capabilities and limitations in legal contexts through prototype development, structured evaluation, and deployment in educational settings.
12. *Build production AI systems that serve institutional needs - including autonomous multi-agent systems, natural language interfaces, and document processing pipelines - exercising independent technical judgment in architecture, tool selection, and implementation.
13. *Serve as the law school's primary resource for understanding AI technologies and their implications, providing guidance that enables informed decision-making across the institution.
14. Disseminate findings through conference presentations, publications, and engagement with professional organizations, positioning the law school as a contributor to national conversations on AI and legal education.
15. Represent the law school on committees and working groups related to AI and legal technology, including judiciary committees, bar association initiatives, and UH systemwide AI planning efforts.
16. *Coordinate with the law school's IT and library staff on technology infrastructure needs arising from AI development and deployment.

Minimum Qualifications
1. Possession of a baccalaureate degree in political science, humanities, computer science, information technology, philosophy, education or a related field and 3 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for instructional support and design, curriculum development, course design, or university-level instruction; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
2. Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of artificial intelligence technologies including instructional support/design, curriculum development, course design, or university-level instruction as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.
3. Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with artificial intelligence and instructional support/design, curriculum development, course design, or university-level instruction.
4. Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
5. Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
6. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
7. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software, and demonstrated knowledge of Python, JavaScript and cloud services (AWS or equivalent), and modern AI/ML frameworks and APIs.
8. If applicable, for supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.
9. Experience working with students, faculty, and administrators in higher education.
10. Experience building AI-powered applications using large language models or equivalent AI technologies.
Desirable Qualifications
1. Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
2. Advanced graduate degree (Ph.D. or equivalent).
3. Admitted to at least one state bar.
4. Prior experience in legal technology product development or legal practice.
5. Prior experience working on Access to Justice issues or with non-profit legal aid organizations.
6. Experience with AI safety evaluation, AI benchmarking, or AI governance.
7. Demonstrated record of presentations or publications on AI applications in professional domains.
