We Strive for Literacy is a San Diego County nonprofit dedicated to helping children become confident, capable readers through high-dosage, evidence-based literacy instruction. Through the Vista Literacy Collaborative, we bring schools, nonprofits, families, volunteers, and community resources together to expand access to effective literacy support for underserved children. Duties
- Assess WSFL’s current communications, audiences, outreach channels, volunteer needs, and recruitment processes.
- Develop a messaging guide that clearly explains the relationship between We Strive for Literacy and the Vista Literacy Collaborative.
- Create a community-awareness plan, content calendar, reusable templates, and campaign workflow.
- Help define meaningful and sustainable volunteer roles.
- Build systems for volunteer outreach, intake, screening, onboarding, communication, tracking, retention, and recognition.
- Develop and pilot volunteer-recruitment and community-awareness campaigns.
- Track campaign and recruitment results and recommend improvements.
- Train designated staff and users to maintain the new systems.
- Document final procedures, templates, and lessons learned for the Vista Literacy Collaborative Replication Toolkit.

- Interest in communications, marketing, volunteer engagement, education, nonprofits, or community service.
- Familiarity with social media management tools.
- Ability to craft strategic communications plans that effectively reach target audiences through various channels.
- Experience with graphic design or basic visual content creation is desirable but not required.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively across teams and build relationships with external partners.
- Knowledge of marketing principles, public relations strategies, and social media content marketing techniques.
- Comfort learning new technology and developing organized processes.
- Commitment to completing a full-time, one-year service term.
Previous experience in communications, marketing, social media, volunteer coordination, community outreach, or nonprofit service is helpful but not required. Candidates must also meet AmeriCorps VISTA eligibility, screening, and enrollment requirements—this role is your chance to shine!
Pay: Up to $32,000.00 per year
