The California Department of Education’s Government Affairs team is seeking a Legislative Representative. The ideal candidate is a strategic collaborative, proactive professional with a strong understanding of California’s legislative process and a passion for advancing education policy. They excel at building partnerships within the legislature and external stakeholders, coordinate complex legislative analysis, and guide internal teams to develop thoughtful, timely, and strategic responses to legislative and policy issues.
In this role, the successful candidate will monitor and analyze complex legislation affecting TK through 12th grade education, develop recommendations on behalf of the California Department of Education, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, and serve as a trusted liaison with the Legislature, the State Board of Education, state agencies, and education organizations. They will prepare high-quality legislative analyses, policy briefings, presentations, and legislative testimony for department leadership while communicating complex issues clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
The ideal candidate is an exceptional project manager who can coordinate multiple priorities simultaneously, navigate competing perspectives, and facilitate consensus among program staff to ensure accurate, comprehensive, and strategic responses to legislative inquiries and proposals. Fostering collaboration, exercising sound judgment, and keeping projects moving forward in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment is important. Success in this position requires initiative, strong organizational skills, and the ability to build credibility and trust with colleagues and external stakeholders alike.
