Colorado Brain & Spine Institute (CBSI) is seeking a dedicated, detail-oriented Physician Assistant to join our neurosurgery team in a clinic-only capacity. This role focuses exclusively on outpatient clinical care — new patient evaluations, post-operative follow-up, non-operative management, and care coordination — and does not include operating room or first-assist responsibilities. The PA will work closely with our neurosurgeons to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care across a busy multi-provider neurosurgical practice.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Conduct new patient evaluations and consultations for spine, cranial and peripheral nerve neurosurgical conditions, including history-taking, physical/neurological exams, and review of imaging.
- Manage post-operative follow-up visits, including wound checks, assessment of surgical outcomes, and management of post-surgical complications.
- Provide non-operative management for appropriate patients, including medication management, injection referrals, and conservative treatment planning.
- Order, review, and interpret diagnostic studies (MRI, CT, X-ray, EMG/NCS) in coordination with the supervising surgeon.
- Document all patient encounters accurately and in a timely manner within Athenahealth, ensuring notes support appropriate CPT/ICD-10 coding and medical necessity.
- Complete and submit letters of medical necessity as needed.
- Coordinate care with referring providers, physical therapy, pain management, and other specialists.
- Provide patient and family education regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, and post-operative expectations.
- Triage patient phone calls, portal messages, and urgent clinic concerns in collaboration with clinical staff.
- Assist with hospital discharge follow-up and transition-of-care planning.
- Maintain compliance with HIPAA, CMS, payer, and practice documentation standards.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and clinic workflow optimization.
Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program (Master's degree required).
- Current Colorado PA license in good standing (or eligible for licensure prior to start date).
- NCCPA certification (PA-C), current and unrestricted.
- Active DEA registration or eligibility to obtain one.
- Current BLS certification; ACLS preferred.
- Prior experience in neurosurgery, orthopedic spine, or a related surgical subspecialty strongly preferred; new graduates with a strong clinical foundation will be considered.
- Experience with Athenahealth or comparable EHR/practice management systems preferred.
- Working knowledge of neurosurgical and spine CPT coding, prior authorization processes, and payer documentation requirements is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong clinical judgment and ability to independently manage a full outpatient neurosurgical clinic schedule.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain complex medical information clearly to patients and families.
- High attention to detail in documentation, particularly as it relates to coding and payer requirements.
- Ability to work collaboratively with surgeons, administrative staff, and billing/revenue cycle teams.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-volume clinical environment.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage competing priorities.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods throughout the clinic day.
- Ability to assist with patient positioning and basic mobility support as needed during exams.
- Manual dexterity sufficient to perform exams and use clinical equipment and computer systems.
