Hospice Medical Director (1099 Contractor)
Job Description
Compassionate Care Hospice is seeking a compassionate and experienced Hospice Medical Director to provide clinical leadership and oversight for our hospice program. The Medical Director serves as a key member of the interdisciplinary team and is responsible for ensuring the delivery of high-quality hospice and palliative care services consistent with Medicare Conditions of Participation, California regulations, and ACHC standards. The position offers a flexible schedule with primarily remote participation and occasional involvement in meetings, surveys, and quality improvement activities.
Responsibilities
- Provide medical direction and oversight for hospice clinical services.
- Review and certify patient eligibility for hospice services and recertifications.
- Participate in Interdisciplinary Group (IDG) meetings and patient care conferences.
- Collaborate with attending physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, social workers, chaplains, and other hospice team members.
- Provide consultation regarding pain and symptom management.
- Review, approve, and support development of individualized plans of care.
- Ensure physician services are provided in accordance with Medicare Conditions of Participation and hospice regulations.
- Assist with quality assurance, performance improvement, and regulatory compliance activities.
- Support staff education and clinical best practices.
- Be available for physician consultation related to hospice patient care.
- Participate in state, federal, and accreditation surveys as needed.
- Promote compassionate, patient-centered end-of-life care consistent with the hospice philosophy and mission.
Experience & Qualifications
- Active and unrestricted California Physician License (MD or DO).
- Current DEA Registration.
- Board Certification preferred.
- Hospice and Palliative Medicine experience strongly preferred.
- Minimum two (2) years of experience in hospice, palliative care, geriatrics, internal medicine, family medicine, oncology, or related specialty.
- Knowledge of Medicare Hospice Benefit requirements and hospice eligibility guidelines.
- Experience participating in interdisciplinary care planning and physician certification of terminal illness.
- Strong communication, leadership, and collaboration skills.
- Ability to work effectively with an interdisciplinary hospice team.
- Experience with ACHC, Joint Commission, or regulatory survey processes preferred.
