The Payroll Accounting Manager is responsible for overseeing all payroll accounting activities, ensuring accurate and timely recording of payroll transactions, maintaining compliance with accounting standards, and supporting internal controls over payroll processes. Managing two senior accountants, this role serves as a key liaison between Payroll Services, Human Resources, Accounting/Finance, Payroll Tax, and Benefits, while managing payroll-related reconciliations, accruals, reporting, and system/process improvements.

Responsibilities
- Lead payroll accounting activities, including journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, month-end close, and general ledger integrity
- Review payroll accounting transactions, analyze variances, and ensure accurate financial reporting
- Maintain payroll accounting controls, support SOX compliance, and document policies and procedures
- Partner with Payroll, HRIS, and IT to support payroll system implementations, upgrades, integrations, and ERP reconciliations
- Drive process improvements through automation and enhanced payroll accounting workflows
- Manage and develop senior payroll accountants while serving as the payroll accounting subject matter expert
- Collaborate with HR, Payroll, Benefits, FP&A, Payroll Tax, Internal Audit, and business leaders to support payroll operations and financial objectives
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or equivalent experience
- CPA preferred
- 5+ years of accounting experience, including payroll accounting
- Supervisory or team lead experience required
- Experience in large corporate or multi-state payroll environments preferred
- Public company and SOX compliance experience preferred
- Experience with ERP and payroll systems (Oracle, UKG, ADP) preferred
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Proven leadership, team development, and cross-functional collaboration abilities
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, maintain confidentiality (HIPAA/PHI), and drive process improvements in a fast-paced environment
