Special Education Paraprofessional
Hours/Time/Calendar:
Elementary 8 am to 4:00 pm/7.5 hours per day/182 days
Middle School High School 7:30 to 3:30 pm/7.5 hours per day/182 days
Position Summary:
The Special Education Student Support Paraprofessional provides instructional, adaptive, and behavioral support to students with cognitive impairments in order to help them achieve success in school. Working under the direction of a certified Special Education Teacher and/or administrator, this position assists students individually and in small groups with academic tasks, daily routines, social skills, and self-care. The paraprofessional helps implement individualized education program (IEP) goals and provides students with the support they need to access a safe, inclusive, and nurturing learning environment. This position works with the most at-risk students as identified by appropriate data.
Qualifications:
Paraprofessionals working in programs supported by grant funds must meet at least one of the following requirements prior to hire (otherwise, candidates may be hired as substitutes until requirements are met):
- Minimum of an Associate’s Degree or 60 semester hours from an accredited institution of higher education
- SAT with a passing score of at least 480 on Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and 530 on Math
- ETS Parapro Assessment with a passing score of 460
- Passing score on the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) Basic Skills Test or Professional Readiness Examination
Additional Preferred Qualifications:
- CPR certification or willingness to obtain
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (CPI) trained or willingness to be trained
- Coursework or experience in special education, child development, or related field
- Ability to provide support with functional academics, life skills, and adaptive behavior
- Strong communication and collaboration skills
- Ability to establish positive relationships with students, families, and staff from diverse backgrounds
- Physical ability to assist students as needed (bend, twist, stoop, squat, and lift up to 50 pounds)
Job Responsibilities:
- Provide academic and adaptive support to students with cognitive impairments as directed by the Special Education Teacher
- Assist students with daily living skills, self-care tasks, and functional routines
- Assisting students with personal care management such as diapering, toileting, and feeding
- Support students in developing communication, social, and independence skills
- Implement instructional and behavior support strategies outlined in student IEPs
- Monitor and document student progress toward IEP goals using approved tools
- Assist students with participation in classroom activities, transitions, and community-based instruction (if applicable)
- Encourage positive behavior and reinforce self-regulation strategies
- Communicate student needs and progress with supervising staff in a timely manner
- Maintain confidentiality of student and family information
- Participate in staff meetings, training, and professional development as assigned
- Foster a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for all learners
- Represent the district professionally when working with students, staff, families, and the community
Note: Physical requirements are consistent with a school/classroom environment.
Oral communication skills are important to the completion of assigned daily tasks.
This is a grant-funded position. Services provided by this role are supplemental and do not replace the general educational program of the district.
