Founded in 2018 in Birmingham, Alabama, Build UP is a workforce development high school model with three campuses and six programs in Birmingham and Selma, Alabama and Brownsville, Texas. The vision of Build UP is to empower and equip youth and communities to determine their own future. At Build UP, students are able to:

Position: High School Science Teacher (Biology & Chemistry)
Location: YouthBuild Brownsville, Brownsville, Texas
Reports to: Assistant Principal
The Science Teacher is responsible for delivering rigorous, engaging, and student-centered instruction in Biology, Chemistry, and GED Science.
This role requires a highly effective educator capable of differentiating instruction across varied academic levels while accelerating student learning for both diploma-bound and GED-track students. Instruction should integrate scientific reasoning, laboratory experiences, and real-world workforce applications, preparing students for postsecondary success in both college and skilled trades pathways. The teacher will report to and collaborate daily with the Assistant Principal.
Plan and deliver instruction in:
Biology
Chemistry
GED Science
Design lessons that build foundational scientific knowledge while advancing critical thinking and analytical skills.
Maintain instructional quality across multiple course preparations.
Develop and implement TEKS-aligned Biology and Chemistry curriculum.
Develop and implement GED Science instruction aligned to current GED standards.
Submit timely, high-quality lesson plans that reflect intentional design and alignment.

Ensure all students can access rigorous content regardless of starting level.
Conduct frequent checks for understanding.
Analyze student performance data to guide instruction.
Differentiate instruction for:
Below-grade-level learners
English Language Learners (ELLs)
Students with IEPs
GED-track students requiring acceleration
Maintain consistent classroom structures and expectations.
Establish a respectful, structured, and academically focused learning environment.
Utilize restorative practices and least-invasive interventions.
Hold students to high expectations for participation, effort, and completion.
Maintain strong systems of accountability and academic ownership.
Consistently connect learning to workforce applications and postsecondary opportunities.
Bachelor’s degree required (Biology, Chemistry, Science Education, STEM, or related field preferred).
Teaching certification preferred (or willingness to obtain within 24 months).
Experience teaching high school science and/or GED Science preferred.
Strong ability to differentiate instruction across varied academic levels.
