American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Behavioral Health Inpatient Psychiatric position in Rapid City, SD, requiring Epic proficiency and at least 1 year of psych experience on a 12-hour night shift schedule.

Inpatient behavioral health facility located off the main hospital campus in Rapid City, SD

52-bed unit serving three inpatient psychiatric floors
-
Patient population includes children and adolescents (ages 5–17) and adults with diagnoses such as depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, psychosis, and adjustment disorder — candidates should be aware they will work with pediatric patients

No dementia, severe autism, forensic, or incarcerated patients; no ECT performed
-
RN-to-patient ratio of 1:8–9, supported by a psych tech
-
12-hour night shifts (2000–0830)
-
Every other weekend required; weekend shifts may include a combination of 12-hour and 8-hour shifts (Fri/Sat/Sun)

Floating may occur between the three floors within this off-site behavioral health facility, within scope of practice

Epic EMR experience is required; Omnicell used for medication dispensing

Low census on-call possible depending on patient acuity

2 references dated within the last year required for consideration

DOB and SSN required for consideration

Active RN license — South Dakota Board of Nursing license or Compact RN license currently in hand

Graduation from a board-approved nursing education program
-
Minimum 1 year of psychiatric nursing experience required; first-time travelers must have 2+ years of experience

BLS certification required; CPI certification preferred prior to start but can be obtained on assignment

Epic EMR experience required

Ability to perform physical restraint and takedown of agitated patients if necessary
-
Verbal de-escalation and group didactic communication skills
-
Must reside more than 100 miles from any Monument Health facility
-
Responsibilities include medication administration (PO and injectable), care plan evaluation, admission screenings, assessments, minor wound care, EKGs (training provided), glucometer operation, telephone/verbal orders, vital signs, Columbia Suicide Risk Screening, end-of-shift reporting, patient belongings logging, and patient safety rounds every 15 minutes

Comprehensive on-unit safety support includes 24/7 security with tasers, panic alarms worn by all staff, cameras throughout the unit, 24/7 MD on-call coverage, and a Behavioral Emergency Response Team (BERT) available around the clock

Charge nurse (Clinical Resource Nurse) available on shift 24/7 across all three units; resource nurse available on nights

Lab draws routine labs daily; behavioral health staff responsible for STAT lab draws; no IV/VAT team on site

Orientation consists of 2 shifts for facility orientation, 1 shift of e-learning modules, and 2 shifts of departmental orientation

Travelers may occasionally be expected to precept nursing students

2 of 4 major holidays required; if working Thanksgiving or Christmas, the other is off

No RTO approved during the Sturgis Bike Rally (first 3 weeks of August)
