Position Summary
The HR Business Partner serves as a trusted advisor to managers and employees, partnering with leadership to provide strategic and day-to-day support across employee relations, workplace investigations, leave administration, reasonable accommodations, workers' compensation, performance management, policy interpretation, and compliance.
Reporting to the Director of Human Resources, this position collaborates closely with Operations, Accounting, and leaders across the organization to foster a positive employee experience while ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws. The ideal candidate is a strong employee relations professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment, exercises sound judgment, and enjoys balancing strategic partnership with hands-on execution.
This position is based in our San Carlos office and requires regular onsite presence. Hybrid flexibility may be available following successful onboarding based on business needs and performance. Occasional travel may be required to support regional operations, conduct site visits, participate in meetings, and attend company events.
Position Responsibilities
- Partner with managers on employee relations, performance management, coaching, conflict resolution, and organizational effectiveness.
- Conduct and manage workplace investigations involving harassment, discrimination, retaliation, policy violations, misconduct, and other employee concerns; prepare thorough documentation and provide recommendations for resolution.
- Serve as the primary resource for leave administration, including FMLA, CFRA, Pregnancy Disability Leave, ADA interactive process, reasonable accommodations, and multi-state leave compliance.
- Coordinate and manage workers' compensation claims, return-to-work programs, and workplace injury reporting in partnership with carriers, third-party administrators, and managers.
- Advise managers on corrective action, performance improvement plans, disciplinary actions, and terminations while ensuring legal compliance and consistency.
- Interpret and administer company policies while ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws.
- Support recruiting, onboarding, employee engagement, and retention initiatives.
- Deliver manager training and coaching on employee relations, compliance, performance management, and HR best practices.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with HR, Accounting, Operations, and leadership teams to support organizational initiatives and process improvements.
- Maintain accurate HR documentation and reporting while handling confidential information with professionalism and discretion.
Education & Experience
- Minimum 3–5 years of progressive Human Resources experience, including significant employee relations responsibilities.
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field preferred.
- Professional Human Resources certification (PHR, PHRca, SPHR, SHRM-CP, or SHRM-SCP) preferred.
- Strong knowledge of California employment law, including wage and hour laws, leave administration, workplace accommodations, and workers' compensation practices.
- Experience conducting workplace investigations and advising managers on employee relations matters.
- Experience with HRIS systems; ADP Workforce Now experience highly preferred.
- Multi-state HR experience preferred.
- Multifamily property management experience is a plus.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong employee relations, conflict resolution, and workplace investigation experience.
- Thorough understanding of California employment law and multi-state HR compliance.
- Experience administering leaves of absence, ADA accommodations, and workers' compensation programs.
- Intermediate Microsoft Excel skills, including Pivot Tables, XLOOKUP/VLOOKUP, sorting, filtering, and basic reporting functions.
- Excellent communication, coaching, and interpersonal skills.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
- Proficiency with HRIS platforms, Microsoft Office, and reporting tools.
- Strong customer service mindset and ability to build collaborative relationships across all levels of the organization.
Work Location
This position is based onsite in San Carlos, CA. Hybrid flexibility may be available after onboarding based on business needs and performance.
