Position: Infection Preventionist Nurse
Shift: 8am - 4:30pm
POSITION PURPOSE:
The Infection Preventionist reports to the Director of Nursing and partners with the Medical Director, the
facility QAPI Team, and other stakeholders to develop a system of care that promotes sound and
scientific infection prevention principles and practices.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF POSITION:
- Ensure a facility wide system for preventing, identifying, reporting, investigating, and controlling
infections and communicable diseases
- Maintain written standards, policies, and procedures for the facility’s Infection Prevention and
Control Plan (IPCP)
- Maintain a system for recording incidents and infections identified under the facility’s IPCP and
corrective actions taken by the facility
- Develop an antibiotic stewardship program that promotes the appropriate use of antibiotics and
includes a system of monitoring to improve resident outcomes and reduce antibiotic resistance.
- Regular reporting on antibiotic use and resistance to prescribing clinicians and nursing staff
- Assist with education to staff and residents on sound infection control practices and antibiotic
stewardship
- Serve as an active member of the facility’s QAA committee and report to the committee in
regards to the IPCP on a regular basis
- Conduct an annual review of the IPCP
- ALL OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED BY SUPERVISOR; THIS POSITION MAY BE A
DESIGNATED PART-TIME POSITION WORKED IN CONJUCTION WITH AN ALTERNATE
CLINICAL POSITION IN THE FACILITY
EDUCATION / REQUIREMENTS:
RN or LPN with unrestricted state license. Two (2) years previous nursing experience required, preferably
working in the long-term care/skilled nursing setting. In addition, the IP position requires the applicant
to have completed specialized training in infection prevention and control.
Must be a supportive team member, contribute to and be an example of teamwork and team concept.
Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action. Must
possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government
agencies/personnel, and the general public. Must be knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices
and procedures, as well as laws, regulations and guidelines that pertain to long term care facilities. Must
be organized and be able to meet deadlines.
