CNC Mill Machinist — 5-Axis Setup & Operation

POSITION SUMMARY
Jaco Engineering is an established Anaheim precision machine shop producing close-tolerance machined components for the aerospace and defense industries. We are seeking an experienced CNC Mill Machinist to set up and operate our 5-axis milling machines on first shift.
This is a setup and proveout role, not a button-pushing job. The center of the job is taking a program furnished by our CNC programming team and making it produce a good part: building the fixture, setting the trunnion and tooling, dialing in offsets, running and proving out the first article, inspecting it against the print, and working shoulder to shoulder with the programmer to correct whatever the machine reveals. Once the process is proven you run the job and hold it. Experience on true trunnion-based 5-axis machines is required.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Set up and operate CNC milling machines — vertical, horizontal, and 5-axis vertical mills — producing close-tolerance machined parts for aerospace and defense customers.
- Interpret precision machined part blueprints, GD&T callouts, and written work instructions to understand every feature and tolerance before running the job.
- Perform complete setups: build and load fixtures and workholding, load and validate the furnished program, set tooling and tool offsets, and establish part zero and datum alignment — including trunnion and rotary centerline setup on 5-axis machines.
- Prove out programs furnished by our CNC programming team: dry run and verify the program, confirm clearances and tool reach, cut the first article, inspect it against the print, and confirm the process is capable before releasing the job to production.
- Work side by side with the programmer during proveout — report conflicts, gouges, reach and clearance problems, poor cutter conditions, and holding tolerance issues, and recommend the program or fixture changes needed to make the part comply.
- Modify offsets and edit G code at the control on Fanuc and Siemens Cellos machines to hold size and correct in-process conditions.
- Load and run production parts, change cutting tools, and make the offset and speed/feed adjustments needed to maintain quality and tool life.
- Inspect work pieces during production using micrometers, calipers, bore gages, indicators, and related instruments; complete inspection documentation accurately.
- Use on-machine touch probe capability to check part location and features where available.
- Consult with the CNC programming team on the best machining plan for a part, and give practical recommendations on tooling, cutters, workholding, and process improvements.
- Meet production goals: track part counts, update data entry and timekeeping stations, and communicate status and problems promptly.
- Organize and maintain shop tooling, including tool accountability and returning tooling to its proper location.
- Assist with routine machine upkeep — coolant, chip removal, cleaning — and keep the machine and surrounding work area clean and orderly.
- Support the management team with other duties as assigned in a positive, team-oriented manner.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum seven (7) years of hands-on experience as a CNC mill machinist in a precision machining environment.
- Proven true trunnion-based 5-axis milling experience — setting up and running simultaneous 5-axis work on a trunnion-table machine, including trunnion and rotary centerline setup, fixture height and clearance planning, and work offset establishment on the rotary. This is a core requirement of the position, not a preference.
- 3-axis and 4-axis / 4+ axis milling setup and operation experience.
- Demonstrated ability to perform complete setups independently: fixtures, workholding, program loading, tooling, offsets, and part validation before running production.
- Proven experience proving out furnished CNC programs and producing an in-tolerance first article, working directly with the programmer to resolve program, tooling, and fixturing issues found at the machine.
- Ability to perform G-code programming and at-the-machine program modifications.
- Experience with Fanuc and Siemens controls, including making offset adjustments and editing at the control.
- Experience machining aircraft-grade alloys and heat-treated materials to close tolerances.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical engineering drawings for precision machined parts, including GD&T.
- Ability to inspect parts using micrometers, calipers, bore gages, indicators, and other related measuring instruments, and to complete inspection records.
- Ability to change cutting tools and make offset adjustments to hold size throughout a production run.
- Functional English — able to speak, read, and write English well enough to follow blueprints, work instructions, and written procedures and to document work clearly.
- Mechanical aptitude and prior machine shop experience.
- U.S. Citizen or U.S. Person as defined under ITAR (22 CFR 120.62) — required for access to controlled technical data on U.S. Government defense contracts.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- DMG Mori DMU 5-axis machine and Siemens Cellos control experience. Comparable 5-axis platforms and controls are relevant.
- Mori Seiki, Mazak, or other Fanuc- and Siemens-controlled machine experience.
- Horizontal milling experience in addition to vertical and 5-axis work.
- Experience inspecting parts on the machine using built-in touch probe capability.
- Mastercam mill programming knowledge.
- Experience in an AS9100-certified aerospace or defense machine shop.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & PRE-EMPLOYMENT
- Ability to lift 40+ lbs.
- Ability to stand and work at a machine for a ten-hour shift.
- Ability to work in a noisy shop environment.
- Ability to pass pre-employment physical screening.

SCHEDULE, COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
- Full-time, permanent, first-shift position in a clean, air-conditioned facility.
- Monday through Thursday, four ten-hour days (40 hours) first shift, with the possibility of overtime on Fridays. Exact schedule to be negotiated.
