Position Summary:
The CNC Assistant supports the operation of computer-controlled cutting equipment used in the production of granite and quartz countertops. Working closely with the CNC Operator, the assistant helps prepare materials, maintain equipment, and ensure the efficient flow of slabs through the fabrication process. This entry-level role is ideal for someone looking to build a career in granite fabrication with opportunities to grow into a CNC Operator role.
Key Responsibilities:
Machine Support & Operation
- Assist CNC Operator with machine setup, loading slabs, and monitoring cuts
- Verify correct slab tags, job numbers, and material specs prior to cutting
- Help ensure proper placement of vacuum pods and suction cups before and during operation
- Monitor cut progress and report any irregularities to the CNC Operator immediately
Material Handling & Prep
- Safely move slabs and parts to and from the CNC area using overhead cranes or slab carts
- Clean and inspect slabs before cutting for cracks, chips, or defects
- Label, mark, and move cut pieces to polishing or finishing departments as directed
Shop Maintenance & Safety
- Keep work area clean and free of dust, debris, and standing water
- Assist with basic CNC machine maintenance and cleaning
- Follow all company safety protocols, including the use of PPE and safe lifting procedures
- Report any safety issues, hazards, or near misses to supervisor immediately
Communication & Teamwork
- Work closely with CNC Operators, Layout, and Shop Managers to understand job priorities
- Ensure cut pieces are clearly labeled and match job packet instructions
- Support other areas of the shop as needed (e.g., polishing, hand finishing, loading)
Qualifications:
- Previous experience in a granite shop or manufacturing environment preferred, but not required
- Ability to read and understand job tickets and basic measurements
- Comfortable working around heavy machinery and overhead lifting equipment
- Physically capable of lifting 75+ lbs, standing for long periods, and working in a dusty, noisy environment
- Willingness to learn CNC operation and fabrication techniques
- Strong attention to detail and willingness to follow directions
Preferred Traits:
- Team-oriented and reliable with a strong work ethic
- Safety-conscious and proactive in preventing accidents
- Willing to cross-train in other areas of fabrication for growth opportunities
- Basic mechanical aptitude or experience with power tools is a plus
