General Description
This is a highly responsible administrative position involving record maintenance and citizen contact for the Building and Codes Division of the Community Services Department. This employee must posess the ability to obtain a working knowledge of the overall functions performed by the Department and must possess both written and oral communication skills. This employee schedules inspections, processes permits from preapplication to finalization, and is the interface between the division and the public. This employee reports to the Building Official.
Essential Functions:
1. Assists the City Planner and Building Inspectors by performing duties of a clerical nature including answering questions over the telephone, forwarding calls and scheduling inspections.
2. Processes permit applications, plans and specifications for review, which includes issuing permits for signatures and collecting/processing payments.
3. Verify contractor’s insurances and licenses are valid.
4. Processes paperwork relating to rezoning, special exceptions, variances and annexations for proper submittal to the City Planner.
5. Maintains files in an orderly manner including adding received letters, permits, and related project information to paper and/or electronic records as appropriate.
6. Performs other related duties as directed.
Education and/or Experience:
Essential:
1. High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
2. Must possess adequate typing skills.
3. Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
Preferred:
1. Some construction knowledge.

This employee must possess knowledge of the operations, functions, and scope of authority of the Department as related to the handling and disposition of complaints and requests for information from city residents, contractors and businesses. Must have the ability to perform routing administrative details independently, including the conceptual composition of letters and memos. Must have the ability to interact with the public discuss inquiries and complaints tactfully, courteously and effectively. Must be able to maintain a professional working relationship with other employees and the general public.
