Lay It Out Events is seeking an experienced, hands-on Course Director to join our Bend Races team for the remainder of the 2026 race season, with the opportunity to continue working with us for our 2027 race season and future events.
This is an active, on-the-ground event role for someone who enjoys being outdoors, leading a team and making sure race-day logistics run smoothly. The Course Director will help oversee course setup and breakdown, course marking, aid stations, volunteers and other key race-day operations.
Our ideal candidate is organized, dependable and comfortable taking the lead in a fast-paced event environment. You should be able to make quick decisions, troubleshoot problems as they arise and keep staff and volunteers moving in the right direction.
Required Skills
Candidates should have event management, race production or comparable leadership experience and be comfortable working independently as well as leading event staff and volunteers.
The Course Director must:
- Have strong leadership and communication skills
- Be highly organized with excellent time-management skills
- Be comfortable making quick, critical decisions on race day
- Be able to lead staff and volunteers through event setup, race operations and breakdown
- Be physically able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. and spend extended periods walking, standing and working outdoors
- Be comfortable assisting with course marking and traveling throughout race courses as needed
- Have reliable transportation and the ability to transport event supplies when necessary
- Be comfortable working early mornings, weekends and occasional evenings
Experience & Qualifications
- 2+ years of event management, race production, outdoor recreation or related experience preferred
- Proven ability to work independently and follow detailed event plans
- Experience leading staff and/or volunteers
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to stay calm in a fast-paced environment
- Friendly, outgoing and professional when interacting with participants, volunteers, vendors and partners
- Basic Microsoft Office and general computer skills
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
- Familiarity with Central Oregon trails, roads and recreation areas is a plus
- Running, trail running or endurance event experience is a plus, but not required
Responsibilities
- Assist with pre-event planning and race-day logistics
- Coordinate and oversee course marking to ensure routes are clearly and safely marked
- Assist with setup and breakdown of start/finish areas, aid stations and other course infrastructure
- Coordinate course supplies, signage, cones, barricades, hydration and other race equipment
- Lead event staff and volunteers assigned to course and aid station operations
- Serve as a key point of contact for course volunteers and race participants on event day
- Monitor the course throughout the event and respond to issues as they arise
- Work with the Race Director and event team to ensure participant safety and a positive race experience
- Help ensure compliance with event permits, safety plans and other race-day requirements
- Proactively troubleshoot weather, course, participant and logistical challenges
- Help maintain, organize and prepare race equipment between events
