Summary
The R&D Technician function is to manufacture, inspect, document, and support prototype testing for the Technology Department. R&D Technicians may have a primary specialty such as machining, inspection, testing or another technology shop skill, and are expected to understand and support other skills as required. R&D Technician receives authority from and reports to the Manager-Technology Operations.
Duties and responsibilities
Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

Primary skill machining:
-
Apply both offline and at machine programming methods for prototype and R&D manufacturing work. Learn and apply various machining languages such as Mazatrol, G-code.

Primary skill inspecting:
-
Set up equipment and perform inspections for prototypes manufactured in R&D according to inspection procedures.

Primary skill testing:
-
Perform tests according to procedures to validate prototype performance which includes operating various testing apparatuses like tensile tester, hardness testers, torque machines, etc.

Create, document, and maintain relevant machine information relating to programs, setup, and operation and maintenance of R&D manufacturing equipment.

Work closely with Technology personnel to Evaluate and understand and perform specified work order operations on an R&D work order, including machining, inspection, identification, finishing, coating, or other required steps.

Move parts, material, tooling, and fixtures to and from the Technology shop using approved material-handling methods, including forklift operation when trained and authorized.

Learn and setup various tooling necessary for operating machines related to manufacturing, inspecting, and testing Prototypes.

Learn and implement advanced manufacturing techniques for prototyping including custom inspection tools, or other advanced manufacturing practices that may be needed to create new Product prototypes

Share practical machining, inspection, testing or manufacturing feedback with design, testing, and technology personnel to improve prototype manufacturability and inspection planning.

Communicate with external parties that may be providing testing, manufacturing, or inspection support to Benoit.

Contribute to maintaining the Technology Manufacturing Facility, including cleaning, maintenance, lubrication, and proper storage of equipment, tools, and work spaces.

Check precision measurement instruments for current calibration status and report outdated or damaged equipment.

Follow Benoit's best practice and industry standards while conducting all job roles and responsibilities.
Qualifications:

High School diploma or GED required. Associate’s degree is preferred.

At least 2-4 years of related experience
-
Works under moderate supervision. Gaining or has attained full proficiency in a specific area of discipline.

Technical coursework machinist training, quality inspection training, or equivalent experience preferred.
-
Experience or aptitude in machining, CNC operation, offline programming, inspection, quality support, manufacturing support, prototyping, testing support, or related work preferred.

Develop a primary shop specialty such as machining, inspection, or a related technology operations skill, and learn supporting skills as required.
-
Read and understand work orders, drawings, specifications, procedures, inspection requirements, and manufacturing documentation.
-
Use or learn manual machines, CNC machines, precision measurement instruments, hand tools, inspection equipment, and shop support equipment.
-
Operate or learn approved material-handling equipment, including forklifts, cranes, when trained and authorized by Benoit.
-
Use or learn offline machining and programming software, including ESPRIT, and maintain related setup and program information.
-
Document maintenance, calibration status, machine setup, inspection results, work order progress, and prototype information accurately.

Effective ritten and oral communication skills with the ability to work with Technology Operations, Product Technology, Quality, Manufacturing, and external support parties.

Must have and maintain a clean driving record and pass motor vehicle report (MVR) checks when operating personal or company vehicles for business purposes.

Stand and walk for extended periods; bend, stoop, reach, kneel, crouch, and use stairs or ladders as required for machining, inspection, material handling, and shop support activities.

Ability to move parts, material, tooling, and fixtures by hand, cart, forklift, or other approved material-handling equipment when trained and authorized.

Use hands and fine motor skills to operate machines, hand tools, measuring instruments, computer controls, parts, fixtures, and documentation systems.

Frequent use of computer, phone, printer, shop equipment, inspection equipment, and other office or production support equipment.

Occasional exposure to noise, temperature variations, outdoor elements, metal chips, coolant, oils, and shop environment; use required personal protective equipment as needed.
