The Opportunity
We are seeking a detail-oriented Associate Commercial Solar Design Engineer to support the engineering and drafting of Commercial & Industrial (C&I) solar PV systems. This is a foundational role for an emerging engineering professional who understands the basics of solar PV and is ready to deepen their technical expertise in the commercial sector.
In this position, you will work closely with our Senior Design Engineers to translate conceptual designs into actionable, permit-ready construction plan sets. You will gain hands-on experience navigating the National Electrical Code (NEC), executing critical electrical calculations, and learning the nuances of complex interconnection strategies and commercial repowering. The ideal candidate brings strong AutoCAD skills and a solid understanding of fundamental PV electrical principles, paired with a hunger to learn and grow.
Core Responsibilities
- System Layout & Drafting: Utilize AutoCAD to draft highly accurate site plans, mechanical layouts, equipment elevations, and wire routing for commercial rooftop, carport, and ground-mount PV systems.
- Electrical Design Support: Assist in drafting single-line diagrams (SLDs) and three-line diagrams. Support senior engineers in detailing interconnection tie-ins and balance of system (BOS) components.
- Electrical Calculations: Perform preliminary engineering calculations under supervision, including voltage drop, string sizing, conduit fill, and basic short-circuit current analysis in accordance with the NEC.
- Permit Package Preparation: Compile comprehensive plan sets and specification sheets for submission to local Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) and utility companies. Help address routine plan check corrections.
- Energy Modeling: Run preliminary performance models using tools like PVsyst or Helioscope to validate system production estimates against physical layouts.
- Cross-Functional Support: Coordinate with Project Managers and Procurement teams to ensure bills of materials (BOMs) accurately reflect the drafted plan sets.
Required Qualifications & Technical Skills
- Experience: 1 to 3 years of direct experience in solar PV design or engineering. (Strong experience in residential PV design will be considered if accompanied by a demonstrated understanding of 3-phase electrical systems and a desire to transition to C&I).
- CAD Proficiency: Solid working knowledge of AutoCAD is mandatory. You must be comfortable generating layouts and drafting electrical line diagrams efficiently.
- Code Familiarity: A foundational understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC), specifically Article 690, and a willingness to master commercial electrical construction standards.
- Analytical Skills: Strong mathematical and analytical capabilities, with the ability to methodically review your own drafting work for accuracy before passing it to senior engineers for final review.
Preferred Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Renewable Energy, or a related technical discipline.
- Licensure/Certifications: Engineer in Training (EIT) certificate or a NABCEP PV Associate (PVA) credential.
- Software Exposure: Previous exposure to 3D modeling tools (e.g., SketchUp) or advanced solar software (PVsyst).
