Facilities/Landscape Assistant
CLASSIFICATION
Classification: Part-Time, 15-20 hours/week, non-exempt at $19-$20/hour
SUMMARY
Facilities/Landscape Assistant will perform a wide variety of manual or semi-skilled duties related to garden operations and events. This entry level position is predominantly Tuesday-Saturday but may include some Sundays, evening, and holiday shifts as needed for events. The Facilities/Landscape Assistant will work both supervised and independently.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES - Applicant may not perform all the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional duties as assigned from those set forth below to address garden needs and changing business practices.
- Facilities maintenance tasks that may include light construction, painting, woodworking, small power tools, etc.
- Landscape maintenance projects may include but are not limited to; pruning, hand-watering plants, assisting the Operations Manager with other miscellaneous projects.
- Events set-up, break-down, and overseeing such as weddings, meetings, and special events.
- Cleaning and maintaining rest rooms facilities, garden structures, and exhibits.
- May help lead and supervise volunteers/docent teams in assigned work projects.
- Responsible for opening and closing of the Garden facility.
- Responsible for following safe work practices.
Education and Experience Requirements
· High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
· A valid California driver’s license.
· At least 3 years of relevant landscaping and horticulture experience preferred.
· Background and Livescan required upon hire.

· Work in a cooperative manner with others and contribute to a successful team effort.
- Use and properly operate assigned tools and equipment.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Read, write, and understand English to follow safety precautions and procedures.
- Always follow a safe working program and requirements.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multi-faceted and sometimes demanding work environment.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES PREFERRED
- Horticultural background
- Comfort using various software; Microsoft Excel and Word for reporting and information access.
- First Aid and CPR certification a plus.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Work may be performed in an office and outdoor environment. Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than 2 (two) hours per day. No or very limited exposure to physical risk. Workplace is non-smoking and drug-free. Weekend and evening hours may be required.

About the Water Conservation Garden: The Water Conservation Garden, a nonprofit organization founded in 1999, is a 5-acre public garden whose mission is “promoting water conservation in the southern California landscape through excellent programs and exhibits that educate and inspire the public.” The Garden serves over 50,000 visitors annually and offers educational tools via 16 display gardens and a full program of tours, classes, and events for children, adults, families, and landscape professionals, both on-and off- site. In 2007, the Garden won the Rain Bird Corporation’s international award for leadership in water conservation; in 2009, Sunset Magazine listed the Garden as one of the “Top Ten Western Gardens.”
