Position Overview:
The Maintenance Technician assists the Director of Facilities in operating, maintaining, and repairing District buildings, equipment, and grounds. This role requires a skilled tradesperson who can work both independently and collaboratively across advanced trades, including electrical, plumbing, heating, and carpentry.
Job Requirements & Qualifications:
- 2+ years of relevant experience in facilities, custodial, or maintenance work *Required
- 4+ years of journey-level experience in one or more trade areas *Preferred
- High school diploma or equivalent; formal training in custodial services or maintenance trades is preferred.
- Valid Rhode Island Driver’s License *Required
- Must be deemed insurable by the district's carrier *Required
- OSHA 10, HVAC/R certification, or specialized trade licensure (Electrician/Plumber) (Preferred)
- Must be able to regularly lift 50+ lbs. (and occasionally up to 100 lbs.)
- Ability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, and crouch to access piping and wiring.
- Strong near-visual acuity, depth perception, and color vision required to read blueprints and safely install parts.
- Subject to both indoor and outdoor work, including extreme weather conditions, noise, and vibration.
- Shift presence and 24-hour call-back availability for building emergencies when required.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Trade & Mechanical Maintenance -
o HVAC/R & Plumbing: Perform troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair on plumbing, heating, and air conditioning fixtures. Assist with the purchase and installation of new systems.
o Electrical Systems: Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair electrical distribution systems, wiring, fixtures, motors, and lighting circuits.
o Carpentry & Painting: Perform structural maintenance, including woodwork, flooring, ceiling systems, doors/closures, drywall patching, and skilled painting.
o Equipment Operation: Safely operate and maintain a variety of hand and power tools, saws, drill presses, and light vehicles (trucks, golf carts).
- Campus Operations & Safety –
o Grounds & Custodial: Perform miscellaneous tasks as needed, including landscaping/irrigation maintenance, spot de-icing/snow removal, furniture moves, and emergency spill cleanups.
o Compliance & Records: Assure strict compliance with federal, state, and local safety codes and regulations. Maintain accurate records for labor, materials, and work orders.
