Reporting to the Museum’s operations department, the Facilities and Maintenance Technician is an approachable hands-on, detail-oriented, multi-tasking individual who can thrive in a fast-paced environment with multiple responsibilities and deadlines.
The Museum’s facilities and maintenance section is responsible for the physical upkeep, safety, and operational readiness of Museum facilities and exhibits. Daily duties bridge facility management and artifact care, ranging from routine HVAC and lighting maintenance to fabricating exhibit displays and moving heavy collections.
Core responsibilities for Museum maintenance include coordinating all Museum repairs and systems maintenance. Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Facility Maintenance: Performing routine maintenance and inspections throughout the Museum, including, but not limited to HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems to ensure environmental conditions (like climate and humidity control) remain stable to protect sensitive artifacts.
- Exhibit Construction & Setup: Assisting with the installation and de-installation of exhibitions, including - building, painting, and dismantling of exhibit walls, pedestals, and display cases. Installing and maintaining audio-visual equipment and lighting for galleries.
- General Upkeep & Repairs:
- Oversee building exterior cleanliness including entrances, egress and walkways, landscape, and other tasks involved with waste control and disposal, fixing structural damage, repairing tools, and maintaining workshop and storage areas.
- Facilitate the janitorial services of all Museum spaces such as offices, meeting rooms, bathrooms, corridors, exhibit galleries, etc., by ensuring all aspects of contract are in compliance.
- Facilitate landscape maintenance services at the Museum, such as weed abatement and landscape contract compliance.
- Recommend improvements to the Museum.
o Perform general repairs, dismantling, fabrication, alteration and minor construction of building structures and systems and performs routine laboring tasks to assist skilled trades engaged in contracted maintenance
- Safety & Compliance: Ensure the facility complies with safety regulations (e.g., OSHA) and assist in disaster preparedness plans to safeguard objects.
- Inventory: Track maintenance and janitorial inventory and supplies, order hardware. and assist curatorial staff coordinate with outside contractors for major repairs.
- Vendor Management: Coordinate outside contractors for general maintenance, major repairs and projects, large special events, andother requests that assist the Museum to be maintained in a manner in accordance with American Alliance of Museum standards.
- Record Keeping and Finance:
- Maintain records of scheduled and non-scheduled maintenance; obtain quotes; arrange for services of outside vendors and contractors.
- Review and recommend for approval all Museum maintenance invoices and contract invoices to ensure billing is accurate and within budget.
- Assist in maintenance budget development and adherence; ensure the actual costs align with the projected budget.
- Assist in developing a deferred maintenance schedule and projected budget; make recommendations for long-term infrastructure, repairs, upgrades, or safety improvements.
- May perform other duties as assigned in connection with operational requirements and temporary project demands.

- Execute multiple tasks & priorities with frequent interruptions
- Balance, bend, climb, crouch, reach, stand for extended periods, sit and twist; must have the finger dexterity to operate mechanical, office and computer equipment as well as power tools, as needed to perform necessary tasks.
Perform manual labor such as loading and unloading of materials or equipment, or delivering supplies or inventory to key personnel, Museum stakeholders, or to off-site storage location.
- Work in an interior and exterior environment (including varied temperatures and conditions) as well as at off-site locations.
- Available to work some evenings and holidays, and at least one weekend day, including opening and/or closing premises and alarming facilities before or after daily Museum operations.
- Comply with a maintenance or emergency on-call policy, when necessary or requested.
