Gethsemane Baptist Church
Job Title:
Worship Leader
Position Status:
Part-Time
Reports To:
Senior Pastor & Associate Pastor
Ministry Purpose:
The Worship Leader at Gethsemane Baptist Church is responsible for helping lead the congregation in Christ-centered, biblical, and meaningful worship. This position is more than leading songs; it is a ministry role that requires spiritual maturity, preparation, teamwork, and a genuine desire to point people to Jesus Christ.
The Worship Leader will work closely with the Senior Pastor, Associate Pastor, musicians, vocalists, choir, and other members of the worship ministry to create services that honor God, support the preaching of His Word, and encourage congregational participation.
Primary Responsibilities:
1. Lead Congregational Worship
- Lead worship during Sunday morning services and other services as requested.
- Select and prepare music that is biblically sound, Christ-centered, and appropriate for the congregation.
- Incorporate a healthy blend of traditional hymns, praise and worship music, and contemporary Christian music.
- Encourage congregational participation rather than creating a performance-centered atmosphere.
- Lead with enthusiasm, reverence, authenticity, and a visible heart for worship.
2. Plan and Prepare Worship Services
- Work closely with the Senior Pastor and Associate Pastor in planning worship services.
- When possible, select music and worship elements that complement the sermon passage, theme, or emphasis of the service.
- Provide song selections and service information in sufficient time for musicians, vocalists, media volunteers, and church leadership to prepare.
- Help ensure smooth transitions between songs, prayer, Scripture, offering, preaching, invitation, and other elements of worship.
- Be prepared to make adjustments when special services or ministry needs arise.
3. Develop and Lead the Worship Team
- Recruit, encourage, and develop musicians, vocalists, choir members, and others who desire to serve through music.
- Utilize the gifts and abilities of different church members rather than relying unnecessarily on the same individuals.
- Schedule and lead rehearsals as needed.
- Communicate clearly with worship team members regarding songs, schedules, expectations, and changes.
- Create an environment of unity, encouragement, spiritual growth, and excellence within the worship ministry.
4. Provide Spiritual Leadership
- Demonstrate a growing personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
- Maintain a lifestyle and testimony consistent with biblical Christian leadership.
- Regularly participate in the life and ministry of Gethsemane Baptist Church.
- Pray with and for the worship team and congregation.
- Remember that the purpose of the worship ministry is to glorify God and lead His people in worship—not simply to provide music.
5. Support Special Services and Ministries
The Worship Leader will assist with music and worship planning for special services and events as reasonably needed, including:
- Easter and Christmas services
- Homecoming and anniversary services
- Revival or special worship services
- Mission emphasis services
- Funerals and memorial services when available
- Other church-wide services or events as coordinated with pastoral leadership
6. Communication and Teamwork
- Maintain regular communication with the Senior Pastor and Associate Pastor.
- Attend staff or ministry planning meetings when requested and reasonably possible.
- Be receptive to feedback and willing to make adjustments when needed.
- Work cooperatively with church staff, volunteers, musicians, media personnel, and ministry leaders.
- Help promote unity within the church and worship ministry.
Qualifications:
The Worship Leader should:
- Have a clear testimony of faith in Jesus Christ and demonstrate Christian character.
- Agree with and support the beliefs, mission, and ministry of Gethsemane Baptist Church.
- Have experience leading congregational worship or demonstrate the ability to do so effectively.
- Possess sufficient musical ability to confidently lead singers and musicians.
- Be comfortable leading both traditional hymns and contemporary worship music.
- Demonstrate strong communication, organization, and interpersonal skills.
- Be dependable, prepared, punctual, and willing to work as part of a ministry team.
- Have a teachable spirit and willingness to receive direction from pastoral leadership.
- Understand that worship leadership is first and foremost a ministry and calling to serve God and His church.
General Expectations:
Because this is a part-time ministry position, the Worship Leader is expected to manage preparation and rehearsal responsibilities effectively while maintaining consistent communication with pastoral leadership.
The Worship Leader should normally be present and prepared for scheduled worship services, rehearsals, and special services for which he or she is responsible. When an absence is necessary, the Worship Leader should communicate with pastoral leadership as early as possible and assist in arranging appropriate coverage.
Ministry Philosophy:
At Gethsemane Baptist Church, we believe worship should be biblical, Christ-centered, Spirit-led, congregational, and focused on glorifying God.
Our desire is not simply to have excellent music, but to cultivate a church that worships the Lord together. Musical excellence is important, but it should always serve the greater purpose of helping people focus their hearts and minds on Jesus Christ.
The Worship Leader should help create an atmosphere where multiple generations can worship together through a thoughtful blend of hymns, praise songs, and contemporary worship while keeping Scripture, prayer, and the gospel at the center.
Mission:
The Worship Leader will support the overall mission of Gethsemane Baptist Church:
Win. Disciple. Send.
Through worship ministry, we desire to help people encounter Christ, grow as His disciples, and be equipped to live faithfully for Him in the church and in the world.
Additional Responsibilities:
This job description is intended to describe the primary responsibilities of the Worship Leader but is not intended to be an exhaustive list. Additional ministry-related responsibilities may be assigned by the Senior Pastor in consultation with the Worship Leader as needs arise.
