Assistant Teacher Job Description
Position Summary
The Assistant Teacher supports the Lead Teacher in providing a loving, Christ-centered, developmentally appropriate environment while maintaining compliance with DCYF regulations and utilizing trauma-informed practices.
Qualifications
- Meet all Minnesota DCYF Assistant Teacher requirements: at least 18 years of age; High School Diploma/GED; College: 12 quarter credits (credits need to be from DCYF approved list; 2,080 hours as an aide or student intern (equivalent of 1 year at 40 hours per week).
- Background study clearance and required training.
- Ability to lift 40 pounds and actively engage with children
Essential Responsibilities
- Assist with implementing daily schedules and activities.
- Provide active supervision and ensure children's safety.
- Support routines including meals, toileting, rest, and transitions.
- Build positive relationships with children and families.
- Complete assigned classroom cleaning and organization duties.
- Assist with observations and daily reports.
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
- Work cooperatively with all staff members.

- Recognize that behavior is communication.
- Respond calmly and respectfully to challenging behaviors.
- Foster emotional safety, predictability, and trust.
- Use connection before correction.
- Practice positive guidance rather than punishment.
- Support children's individual needs with empathy and consistency.

- Demonstrate Christ-like character in words and actions.
- Treat children, families, and coworkers with kindness, understanding and helpful action.
- Incorporate Biblical values, prayer, worship, and faith-based curriculum as appropriate.
Childcare Benefit
Staff members who enroll their children at the Center pay a discounted tuition rate of $100 per week per child.
Compensation
This Hourly position pays between $18-$20 depending on experience and qualifications. Willow Child Development Center’s comprehensive benefits package for full-time employees includes medical, dental, retirement plan, medical telehealth, 80 hours of Earned Sick and Safe Time (ESST), and employee assistance program.
