Job Description
DEFINITION AND DUTIES:
Under general supervision of the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor, performs upfitting emergency and other municipal vehicles with specialized equipment, including lights, sirens, radios, computer systems, camera systems, partitions, weapon racks, and other components. Performs mechanical work with vehicles and equipment in a wide range of maintenance, diagnosis, and repair activities.
Knowledge of:
Vehicle wiring, circuits, and electrical troubleshooting
12V/24V DC systems and electrical safety
Standard practices, materials, tools, equipment, techniques, and principals used in the upfitting field
Troubleshooting and diagnosis processes and procedures used in upfitting, repair, and preventive maintenance programs
Familiarity with law enforcement and specialty equipment vendors (e.g., Whelen, Havis,
Gamber-Johnson, Motorola).
OSHA regulations and EPA Guidelines and Standards affecting work
English language to include basic grammar, sentence structure, and punctuation
Ability to:
Diagnose and repair electronic and specialized equipment malfunctions on small, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment including hydraulic lifts
Operate assigned equipment safely and in conformance with manufacturer’s recommendations
Use a computer for the purposes of data entry, word processing, email, and Internet
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the public
Use independent judgement in accomplishing tasks
Represent Johnson County and perform duties in a professional, responsible and trustworthy manner
Keep accurate records
Understand and follow written and oral directions
Perform manual labor (moderate to heavy) for extended periods of time
Handle moderate levels of stress, meet deadlines and solve problems appropriate to the position

Have sufficient personal mobility and dexterity necessary to complete work
Lift, move, carry, push and/or pull up to approximately 50 to 100 pounds

Have sufficient vision which permits production and review of a wide variety of materials both electronic and hardcopy forms
Have sufficient manual dexterity to operate equipment and hand tools with moderate use, make handwritten notations, which permits light use of a keyboard and mouse
Train other mechanics for compliance with work policies, procedures, diagnostics, and safety standards
Occasionally work in unfavorable weather conditions
Work occasional overtime as needed
Be on call in emergency conditions
MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
High school graduate or equivalent AND six (6) years of experience in law enforcement or municipal vehicle electrical work and vehicle up-fitting OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. ASE Certification or Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Certification is a plus but not required.
Special requirements: Insurable under county liability coverage. Safe driving record. Must pass background check, physical exam, drug test post-offer and be able to pass random drug and alcohol testing thereafter.
