Library Specialist Part-Time

WAYNE COUNTY JOB DESCRIPTION for
LIBRARY DEPARTMENT

General Summary
The Library Specialist performs a wide range of support duties to ensure efficient daily
operations of the public library, including nights and weekends on a rotating basis. This
position assists patrons with information needs, supports circulation and technical services, and
contributes to maintaining a welcoming and organized library environment. This position uses
library values, mission, vision, and strategic plans to guide direction of work.

General Responsibilities
 Provide friendly and effective customer service to library patrons of all ages,
abilities, and backgrounds
 Assist patrons with locating materials, using the catalog, and accessing digital
resources
 Perform circulation desk duties, including checking materials in and out, issuing
library cards, and handling fines/fees
 Support basic reference services by answering directional and general
information questions; referring complex inquiries to professional staff
 Maintain library collections by shelving, shelf-reading, shifting, and organizing
materials
 Assist with processing new materials, including labeling, covering, and data
entry
 Help patrons with public computers, printing, scanning, and basic technology
questions
 Support library programs, events, and outreach activities as needed
 Ensure public spaces are clean, orderly, and welcoming
 Follow library policies and procedures, including confidentiality of patron
records
 Assist with opening and closing procedures
 Other duties as assigned

Specialty Responsibilities (as assigned)
Experience Team

 Plan, develop, implement, and evaluate a wide range of library programs
 Coordinate recurring and special events such as workshops, author talks,
performances, and community forums
 Assess community needs and interests to design relevant and inclusive
programming
 Manage program logistics, including scheduling, registration, supplies, and room
setup
 Track attendance and evaluate program effectiveness using data and participant
feedback

Library Specialist Part-Time

Engagement Team
 Assist in promoting library services, programs, and resources through displays,
social media, and community interactions
 Support outreach initiatives to schools, community organizations, and
underserved populations
 Help create promotional materials such as flyers, bookmarks, and digital
content
 Participate in events, tabling, and community engagement activities
 Assist in upkeep of the library’s digital presence

Resources Team
 Select, evaluate, and manage library materials in assigned subject areas and
formats
 Review professional journals, vendor catalogs, and other sources
to identify materials for acquisition
 Perform regular weeding
 Recommend books and other materials based on patron interests, reading
levels, and preferences
 Create book lists, displays, and curated collections to promote library materials
 Support programming efforts through collection promotion
 Collaborate with the Engagement team to promote new and noteworthy
materials

Family Services Team

 Plan, implement, and evaluate programs for children (ages 0–12) and their
caregivers, including storytimes, family events, and educational activities
 Promote early literacy through developmentally appropriate programming and
caregiver education
 Create engaging displays and curated booklists that encourage family reading
and learning
 Foster a welcoming and inclusive environment for families of all backgrounds
 Build relationships with caregivers and provide guidance on library services and
early learning resources
 Collaborate with schools, childcare providers, and community organizations to
expand library outreach and services
 Collaborate with the Engagement team on outreach visits, community events,
and partnership initiatives

Operations Team

 Assist with day-to-day library operations
 Assist with library courier services
 Shelve returned books and maintain bookstacks
 Provide circulation and technology support to patrons

Library Specialist Part-Time

Minimum qualifications
 High School diploma or GED
 1 to 2 years of customer service and/or clerical experience, and basic computer

literacy.
 Valid driver’s license
 Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field

MINIMUM STANDARDS REQUIRED
TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including computers, copiers,
typewriters, calculators, recording machines, etc. Must be able to exert up to 40 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds
of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of
those for Sedentary Work. Light Work usually requires walking or standing to a significant degree. However, if the use of arm
and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is
rated for Light Work.
Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural or composite
characteristics (whether similar or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.
Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes
giving instructions, assignments or directions to subordinates or assistants.
Language Ability: Requires the ability to read a variety of records, forms and correspondence. Requires the ability to prepare forms,
receipts, and correspondence, using prescribed formats and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style.
Requires the ability to speak to people with poise, voice control and confidence.
Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply rational systems to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables
in situations where only limited standardization exists; to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in oral, written, diagrammatic or
schedule form.
Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written
instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of technical or professional languages including
legal terminology.
Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; to add and subtract; multiply and divide; utilize decimals
and percentages.
Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.
Motor Coordination: Requires the ability coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using office equipment.
Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as office equipment. Must have minimal levels of
eye/hand/foot coordination.
Color Discrimination: Does not require the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color.
Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable
to performing under stress and when confronted with persons acting under stress.
Physical Communication: Requires the ability to talk and hear: (Talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken

words. Hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear.) Must be able to communicate via telephone.
