The Idaho Industrial Commission is seeking a full-time Referee to conduct hearings, write decisions, and perform other work related to the adjudication of contested Workers’ Compensation cases.
This is an in-office 40 hours per week position, to be located at the Industrial Commission’s offices in either Boise, Pocatello, or Idaho Falls with the option of a hybrid schedule after six months in the position.

Eligibility:
This job opportunity is open to attorneys who are licensed to practice in Idaho and are in good standing with the Idaho State Bar.
Responsibilities :
The Idaho Industrial Commission has original jurisdiction in workers' compensation proceedings and appellate jurisdiction in unemployment insurance proceedings. As hearing officers, Referees adjudicate cases relating to workers’ compensation disputes, unemployment insurance appeals and Crime Victims Compensation Program appeals, and write decisions for review by the Commission. Referees may also participate in the Alternate Dispute Resolution (Mediation) process. This is a full-time (40 hours, M-F), on site position to be located at the Industrial Commission Offices in either Boise, Pocatello, or Idaho Falls with the option of a hybrid schedule after 6 months in the position. This position includes travel to conduct in-person hearings throughout the State of Idaho.
Example of Duties:
- Extensive study of Idaho Workers’ Compensation statutes and case law
- Conducting and controlling hearings including establishing hearing guidelines, explaining legal standards to parties and eliciting testimony and argument
- Ruling on admissibility of evidence, requests for continuance, dismissals, objections and postponements
- Analysis of documents, testimony, relevant evidence, regulations, law and legal precedent
Writing decisions for Commission approval

Minimum Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor from an accredited law school
- Active member in good standing of the Idaho State Bar
- Experience in litigation and/or administrative proceedings
- Experience conducting legal research and drawing legal conclusions
- Experience preparing legal memoranda and filings
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Strong time and case management skills
Strong legal writing skills. Must possess the ability to recognize, analyze, and articulate treatment of diverse issues arising in workers’ compensation cases.

Desired Qualifications:
- Knowledge of Idaho’s Workers’ Compensation Law
- Knowledge of the Judicial Rules of Practice and Procedure under the Idaho Workers’ Compensation Law
- Knowledge of Idaho’s Administrative Rules Under the Worker’s Compensation Law
- Basic mediation skills and an understanding of the Industrial Commission mediation process
Awareness of the programs and departments administered by the Idaho Industrial Commission
