Position Description:
Our mission at Bracken Christian School is to partner with Christian families through the leadership and guidance of the Holy Spirit to provide an excellent education within the context of a biblical worldview, equipping students to impact their communities for Christ.
The School Nurse is expected to uphold the vision, mission, and values of Bracken Christian School while fostering a healthy, safe, and Christ-centered environment for students and staff through comprehensive health services, education, and preventative care.
This position manages the health services for a vibrant and growing campus of approximately 600 students. The ideal candidate possesses strong clinical judgment, excellent emergency assessment skills, exceptional communication abilities, and a heart for serving students and families through compassionate, Christ-like care.
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
- Current Texas Registered Nurse (RN) license
- Current BLS/CPR/AED certification
- Preferred certifications include:
- CPR/AED Instructor Certification
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
- National Certified School Nurse (NCSN)
- Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) certifications for Vision, Hearing, and Spinal Screening
- Minimum of five (5) years of RN experience
- Strong Christian faith and personal testimony
- Previous private Christian school experience preferred
- Demonstrated commitment to serving as a spiritual role model for students
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Proficiency with Google Workspace and electronic student health record systems (FACTS preferred)
- Strong organizational, documentation, and critical thinking skills
- Ability to effectively educate faculty, staff, students, and parents on health-related topics
- Ability to maintain confidentiality with integrity and professionalism
- Manage the daily operations of the campus health clinic, ensuring a safe, welcoming, and Christ-centered environment for student care.
- Provide skilled nursing assessment, first aid, emergency triage, and compassionate care for students experiencing illness or injury.
- Evaluate students for signs and symptoms of acute and communicable illnesses and communicate appropriate recommendations to parents or guardians.
- Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs) and Emergency Care Plans for students with chronic health conditions, including but not limited to Type 1 Diabetes (CGMs and insulin pumps), severe allergies, asthma, seizure disorders, and other specialized medical needs.
- Safely store, document, and administer prescription and over-the-counter medications according to physician orders, parent authorization, Texas nursing laws, and school policy.
- Maintain clinic facilities and procedures in accordance with OSHA standards.
- Maintain clinic supplies, medical equipment, and inventory, ordering materials as needed.
- Collaborate with healthcare providers, counselors, and family service agencies to coordinate student care and referrals when appropriate.
- Maintain complete, accurate, and confidential electronic and hard-copy student health records in FACTS, including emergency backup documentation, in accordance with FERPA, HIPAA, and applicable state regulations.
- Manage and audit student immunization records to ensure full compliance with Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) requirements, communicating proactively with families regarding deficiencies or updates.
- Coordinate and conduct all state-required health screenings, including Vision, Hearing, Spinal, and Acanthosis Nigricans screenings, while maintaining required documentation and reporting.
- Maintain detailed daily documentation of clinic visits, treatments, medication administration, parent communications, physician contacts, and follow-up care.
- Participate in communicable disease prevention, infection control initiatives, and public health reporting as required.
- Provide leadership in planning, implementing, and evaluating emergency medical response procedures for illness, injury, and campus emergencies.
- Serve as a key member of the school's safety and crisis response teams, collaborating with campus administration, security personnel, and local Bulverde EMS and emergency responders when necessary.
- Maintain and update campus trauma response plans in partnership with security and administrative teams.
- Participate on administrative committees and health-related response teams as assigned.
- Serve as the primary health resource for students, parents, faculty, and staff regarding student illnesses, injuries, medical accommodations, and wellness concerns, fostering trust and partnership with families.
- Communicate regularly with parents regarding student health needs, treatment provided, follow-up recommendations, immunization compliance, and ongoing medical accommodations.
- Educate faculty and staff regarding student health concerns, emergency medication administration (including EpiPens and inhalers), infection prevention, bloodborne pathogens, Stop the Bleed, CPR/AED awareness, and other health and safety initiatives.
- Assist teachers with health education resources and classroom instruction when appropriate.
- Collaborate with administrators, counselors, teachers, and outside service providers to support students' physical, emotional, and educational success.
- Demonstrate Christ-like compassion and professionalism in every interaction with students, families, faculty, and visitors.
- Offer a ministry of presence by providing comfort, encouragement, and prayer for students and families when appropriate and welcomed.
- Build meaningful relationships throughout the school community that reflect the mission and values of Bracken Christian School.
Articulate and support the school's mission, vision, and biblical worldview to all stakeholders while serving as a positive spiritual role model.
