We currently have an exciting opportunity for an experienced scientist within the High Energy Density (HED) physics team in our Inertial Fusion Technology (IFT) group at General Atomics. Under general directions with limited review, this position is responsible for applying innovative approaches to resolving unusual or complex scientific problems. Assignments are normally outlined in terms of overall objectives and reviewed largely at completion. Initiates the planning of scientific projects and develops innovative designs or modifications in order to meet project goals.
Independently performs difficult/complex scientific work with instructions as to the general expected results. Documents findings, communicates results to scientific staff, makes technical presentations, and may represent the organization as the prime technical contact on small contracts or single component projects. Provides direction to design or technical staff and may lead a team of moderately experienced professional staff.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Supports operation of scientific systems and documents any problems.

Devises new approaches to resolve unusual or complex scientific problems.

Troubleshoot conflicting design/development requirements, difficult coordination requirements, and special material requirements.

Provides documentation and makes technical presentations as required, and may assist in responding to proposals for new or the expansion of existing business opportunities.

May develop and/or perform computational modeling of scientific phenomena.

May execute research to understand fundamental processes in HED and fusion plasmas and implement knowledge gained to improve experimental designs.

Collaborate and provide support to the wider IFT team and national laboratory researchers in the above topic areas. Provide focal point technical communication within the IFT HED physics team and may represent IFT as the prime technical contact to customers and/or government regulatory agencies.

May coordinate segments of a specific project and may have frequent inter-organization and customer contact on difficult technical issues.

Provides direction to design or technical staff and may lead a team of moderately experienced professional staff.
