The OSI enforces New Mexico law on insurance matters, including consumer protections, review of insurance forms and rates for accuracy and fairness, and helps New Mexicans address insurance concerns. We oversee and regulate most kinds of insurance in New Mexico and we license the individuals and agencies that sell insurance in the state.

Why does the job exist?
The Senior Paralegal provides advanced legal and administrative support to attorneys and the General Counsel within the Office of Legal Counsel (OLC). This position is responsible for processing OLC's mail, assisting with projects, scheduling meetings, managing conference room reservations, maintaining office records and assisting in the development of standard operating procedures. This position is also responsible for managing the Service of Process (SOP) for the agency.
How does it get done?
General legal and administrative support functions include answering phones; copying/scanning; maintaining attorney litigation and non-litigation files, drafting memoranda, correspondence, preparing hearing binders, exhibits and assisting attorneys during administrative hearings as needed.
Accepting Service of Process on behalf of insurance companies and notifying the companies, per statute. Receiving a summons or subpoena from a law firm via SOP Portal, finding the insurance company being served by searching the system, then serving the insurance company for the law firm. Then, once the insurance company accepts service, preparing an acceptance of service letter and sending it to the law firm.

Minimum Qualification
Associate Degree in Paralegal Studies and two (2) years of work experience drafting and preparing legal correspondence, conducting legal research, and maintaining a case management/tracking system. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling four (4) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess a valid New Mexico Driver's license, a current defensive driving course certification from the State of New Mexico or must pass Defensive Driving Course Certificate within six months of the date of hire as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required.
