SITE ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH & SAFETY SPECIALIST
Position Summary
The Site Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist is responsible for supporting and promoting a safe, compliant, and productive work environment across Bierlein Companies' project sites. This position serves as an on-site safety resource, trainer, coach, and partner to project management, supervision, employees, subcontractors, and customers.
The Site EHS Specialist is expected to take a proactive, hands-on approach to safety by identifying hazards, working with project teams to develop practical solutions, and helping ensure compliance with company policies, client requirements, and applicable regulatory standards.
This position requires the ability to build positive working relationships with field employees and management while maintaining the confidence and authority necessary to address unsafe conditions or behaviors.
Some travel is required for this position based on project needs. Travel may include assignments throughout Michigan as well as out-of-state project locations.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Promote Bierlein's safety culture and serve as a visible safety presence on assigned project sites.
- Conduct and document new-hire and site-specific safety orientations, toolbox talks, safety meetings, and required employee training.
- Conduct routine jobsite safety inspections and audits to identify unsafe conditions, behaviors, and potential regulatory concerns.
- Work directly with project management and field supervision to develop and implement appropriate corrective actions.
- Identify workplace hazards and assist employees and supervisors in developing safe and practical methods for completing work.
- Develop, review, and maintain site-specific safety plans, Job Safety Analyses (JSAs/JHAs), procedures, permits, and other project-specific safety documentation.
- Review work activities and project scopes to identify potential hazards before work begins.
- Conduct and document incident, injury, property damage, and near-miss investigations, including root-cause analysis and corrective action recommendations.
- Track corrective actions and follow through with project teams to ensure identified safety concerns are appropriately addressed.
- Assist with compliance with applicable OSHA, EPA, DOT, state, local, client, and company requirements.
- Maintain required site safety documentation and records in an accurate and organized manner.
- Maintain Safety Data Sheet (SDS) records and assist with Hazard Communication compliance.
- Select, calibrate, maintain, and operate industrial hygiene and environmental monitoring equipment appropriate to the hazards being evaluated.
- Assist with air monitoring, exposure assessments, respiratory protection, confined-space activities, fall protection, hot work, lockout/tagout, and other high-hazard work as applicable to the project.
- Participate in pre-job planning and project meetings to ensure safety considerations are incorporated into work activities.
- Communicate client-specific safety requirements to project personnel and help ensure those requirements are consistently followed.
- Provide safety coaching and guidance to employees and supervision in a professional and constructive manner.
- Recognize positive safety performance and encourage employee involvement in the company's safety program.
- Exercise appropriate stop-work authority when an imminent danger or serious unsafe condition exists.
- Assist project management with communication involving client safety representatives, regulatory agencies, and other outside parties when appropriate.
- Stay current on applicable safety regulations, industry practices, and company policies.
- Assist with additional safety, environmental, training, or compliance responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
The successful candidate should possess:
- Working knowledge of OSHA regulations and general construction safety requirements.
- Knowledge of applicable federal, state, environmental, and DOT requirements relevant to assigned projects.
- Strong hazard-recognition and risk-assessment skills.
- Ability to evaluate work activities and recommend practical corrective actions.
- Strong analytical, investigative, and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with craft employees, supervisors, project managers, customers, and senior management.
- Ability to coach and influence employees while maintaining positive working relationships.
- Strong organizational and documentation skills with attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced construction environment.
- Ability to work independently while also functioning effectively as part of a project team.
- Ability to remain professional and make sound decisions in challenging or time-sensitive situations.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams.
- Valid driver's license and ability to meet company driving requirements.
- Ability and willingness to travel as required by project needs.
Education & Experience
- Three (3) to five (5) years of environmental, health, and safety experience in construction, industrial, demolition, manufacturing, or a related field is preferred.
- Previous experience working in industrial construction or demolition environments is strongly preferred.
- OSHA 30-Hour Construction certification preferred.
- OSHA 510 training is a plus.
- Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification preferred.
- 40-Hour HAZWOPER training is a plus.
- BCSP certification, such as CHST, ASP, CSP, or similar professional safety credential, is preferred but not required.
- Equivalent combinations of education, training, certifications, and relevant field experience will be considered.
Travel & Work Schedule
This position is primarily project/site based and requires flexibility based on the needs and locations of Bierlein's projects.
Some travel is required. Travel assignments may be within Michigan or to project locations throughout the United States. Depending on project needs, certain assignments may require extended travel for up to approximately three consecutive weeks.
Employees assigned to traveling projects are eligible for Bierlein's applicable travel incentives and per diem.
Out-of-State Travel
- Additional $6.00 per hour added to the employee's regular hourly wage while qualifying for the out-of-state travel incentive.
- $40 per night per diem.
- Bierlein pays approved travel and lodging expenses.
In-State Travel
- Additional $3.00 per hour added to the employee's regular hourly wage while qualifying for the in-state travel incentive.
- $40 per night per diem.
- Bierlein pays approved travel and lodging expenses.
Travel schedules, duration, and frequency will vary based on project assignments and company needs.
Physical & Environmental Requirements
This position requires regular work in active construction, demolition, industrial, and manufacturing environments.
Candidates must be able to:
- Walk and stand for extended periods.
- Climb stairs, ladders, and access work areas at varying elevations as required.
- Navigate uneven terrain and a variety of indoor and outdoor work surfaces.
- Work outdoors in varying weather and temperature conditions.
- Work in active industrial and construction environments that may include noise, dust, heights, heavy equipment, and other jobsite conditions.
- Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Access and inspect active work areas throughout the jobsite.
- Perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
