Full Job Description

Kent Youth and Family Services is hiring teachers for our Early Learning Head Start and ECEAP programs. This position is responsible for providing comprehensive learning experiences for preschool-age children to help them develop school readiness skills. To enhance the parent’s role as the principal influence on their child’s development.

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

Work with assistant teachers to prepare and implement lesson plans based upon the children’s needs and interests, meeting Program Standards, Work Plan, and Curriculum Goals.
Interact positively with children to support their individual learning and to meet their emotional needs. Communicate regularly and respectively with families and encourage their involvement in the program.
Meet with parents on-going (at least three family visits per year) to: partner in educational planning & goal setting; share health, dental, and development information; and to enhance parenting skills.
Administer developmental assessments, including on-going written observations of individual children for the purpose of identifying needs, setting educational goals, making appropriate referrals, and developing an individual learning plan for each child. Provide a varied curriculum and rich environment including multi-cultural and literacy experiences.
Coordinate and perform child health and development screenings to evaluate growth, vision, hearing, nutritional status and development. Review immunization status and doctor and dental reports of each child, making referrals as necessary. Utilize this information to develop an individual health summary plan, (IHSP) for each enrolled child.
Encourage Assistant Teacher, parent, and volunteer participation in all aspects of the program striving to develop teaching skills and enhance leadership abilities through classroom supervision and training.
Continue to develop knowledge and skills in the area of Early Childhood Education through participation in training.
Participate as an active team member in interdisciplinary planning for children and families, and other cross-component coordination, evaluation, and training opportunities.
Provide transition activities for the children and their families assisting in a smooth transition from the Early Learning Program to the public school system.
Maintain complete, accurate records documenting family and child history and contacts, storing them in a confidential manner.

JOB TYPE/SHEDULE: Full-Time, Monday to Friday, day shift with some occasional late afternoon/early evening work

BENEFITS: Company paid 403b retirement: current contribution is at 5% after one year of employment. Paid medical, dental, vision, life and LTD insurance, and paid sick leave.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Competence in various curriculum arts, science, literacy, math & language development.
Competence in planning, organizing, scheduling, classroom arrangement and management, staff and parent communications, and record keeping.
Ability to relate effectively with children, families, community members, and staff of diverse background.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

AA/BA in Early Childhood Education with at least one year in ECE, including 2 credits in each of the 8 WA State ECE Core Compentancies and at least one year experience in a preschool classroom, OR
Current Washington State Teaching Certificate with endorsement in ECE or Early Childhood Special Education with 1 year experience teaching pre-school classroom, OR
AA or higher degree in a related field with 20 credits in ECE and 1 year experience in pre-school classroom. OR
AA or higher degree in ECE and approved Montessori credential.

MIMIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Proof of physical examination, including TB test. If positive, chest x-ray or doctor’s statement.
Obtain First Aid, Infant/Child CPR card and a Food Handler’s permit within 90 days of hire and keep current.
Completion of a successful criminal history and Portal Background Check including fingerprinting.
Must provide documents of measles immunization or resistance prior to working with kids.
Must be able to work a flexible schedule to meet family need including some evenings.
Must be able to travel to meetings and home visits in personal vehicle or agency vans.
Valid Washington State driver’s license, acceptable driving record, personal automobile for use of job related transportation, adequate and current auto insurance meeting minimum Washington vehicle insurance requirements.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work with small and large groups and withstand increased noise levels and/or loud environments.
Physical agility to participate, supervise events and classrooms as needed.
Generally good working conditions with limited or no exposure to extremes in noises, temperature, and weather conditions.
Must have the ability to assist child(ren) during emergencies and daily activities, including occasionally lifting and holding them.
Lift up to 60 pounds with or with out assistance, as well as move educational materials and equipment.
Stand, stoop, kneel, bend, and work with children on the floor for extended periods of time.
Follow universal precautions when caring for children’s hygiene needs, including toileting and emergencies.
