Position Summary
The City is seeking a dependable and qualified Public Works Operator to assist with the daily operations and maintenance of the City’s public works systems and facilities. This position performs a variety of duties related to water distribution, wastewater collection, streets, parks, City facilities, grounds maintenance, special events, and other municipal operations.
Because the City is a small municipality, the Public Works Department handles a wide range of duties. The selected employee must be willing to assist in multiple areas, respond to service needs, and support the safe and reliable operation of City infrastructure.
This position requires a valid Texas Class C Water Distribution License. The employee will be expected to use their license, training, and experience to assist with water distribution operations, service orders, water leaks, meter issues, utility repairs, and other public works responsibilities.
Requirements
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform water distribution duties in accordance with City policies and applicable TCEQ requirements.
- Read and re-read water meters; complete service orders; assist with meter repairs, meter replacements, water service connections, disconnects, and reconnects.
- Investigate and assist with repairs related to water leaks, service line issues, water main breaks, valves, meters, and related water distribution system components.
- Assist with the operation, maintenance, repair, and installation of water distribution and wastewater collection lines, mains, services, and related infrastructure.
- Assist with sewer backups, sewer line maintenance, and wastewater collection system repairs.
- Help locate water and sewer lines and maintain awareness of underground utilities before excavation or repair work.
- Respond to citizen inquiries, service requests, and complaints in a professional and courteous manner.
- Perform general maintenance of streets, alleys, sidewalks, rights-of-way, drainage areas, and public property.
- Assist with pothole repairs, street patching, street sweeping, traffic control, signs, cones, barricades, and flagging as needed.
- Perform mowing, trimming, landscaping, litter removal, tree and brush removal, and general maintenance of parks, grounds, and City-owned property.
- Assist with setup, cleanup, and breakdown for City events and public functions.
- Perform basic maintenance in and around City buildings, parks, and facilities.
Assist with animal control-related duties as assigned and as allowed by City policy and applicable law.
- Operate and maintain hand tools, power tools, equipment, vehicles, and machinery in a safe and responsible manner.
- Maintain work areas, equipment, tools, vehicles, and City property in a clean, safe, and orderly condition.
- Follow verbal and written instructions, safety procedures, traffic control practices, and City policies.
- Maintain regular and timely attendance.
- Participate in rotating on-call duty and respond to after-hours emergencies, including some evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred.
- Valid Texas Class C Water Distribution License required.
- Valid Texas driver’s license required prior to employment.
- One year of experience in public works, water utilities, wastewater, construction, maintenance, equipment operation, or a related field preferred.
- Ability to follow applicable water distribution procedures, safety practices, and City policies.
- Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with supervisors, co-workers, citizens, vendors, and others.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Ability to perform physical labor, including lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, bending, kneeling, standing, walking, and using tools and equipment for extended periods, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Ability to lift and carry heavy objects, up to 80 pounds as job duties require, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Ability to participate in rotating on-call duty and emergency response as needed.
- Must successfully complete all required pre-employment screening, which may include a criminal background check, drug screening, and post-offer physical or ability-to-perform assessment, as permitted by law.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with water distribution systems, wastewater collection systems, meter reading, utility repairs, equipment operation, street maintenance, parks maintenance, or municipal public works.
- Experience operating small equipment, hand tools, power tools, utility vehicles, trailers, mowers, compactors, or similar equipment.
- Knowledge of basic safety procedures, traffic control practices, and utility maintenance practices.
License and Certification Requirements
The selected applicant must maintain a valid Texas Class C Water Distribution License as a condition of employment. The employee may be required to complete continuing education, training, or additional certifications related to water, wastewater, safety, equipment operation, or other public works duties as assigned by the City.
Failure to maintain required licenses or certifications may affect continued employment.

Employment Status
This position is a non-exempt, hourly position and may be eligible for overtime in accordance with applicable law and City policy.
