We are seeking an Independent Living Advocate/Early Start Pre- Employment Career Training Coordinator to join our team! You will provide support to consumers with disabilities in both individual and group settings.
The general scope of duties is to provide information and referral to consumers and the community at large including assistance on rights/laws pertaining to persons with disabilities, while maintaining accurate, up-to-date consumer files, and completing all necessary forms/reports on time and as assigned. The position requires that the employee must believe in and act in accordance with the Independent Living Philosophy. Must maintain complete confidentiality of any and all information that concerns consumers, potential consumers, and staff.
Work Responsibilities
Advocacy. Peer Counseling. Information & Referral. Independent Living Skills. Transition Services.
Provide assistance in the development of programs and implement such programs including: public policy advocacy; independent living skills training; peer counseling/support groups; information and referral; transition services for high school students; others as assigned.
Act as a liaison and advocate for and with consumers with agencies to facilitate receipt of benefits or services.
Provide outreach to students in local coverage area.
Implement job exploration support for transitioning high school students through our Early Start Pre-Employment Career Training program.
Teach the Early Start curriculum to transitioning high school students in area high schools.
Maintain a working relationship with other community organizations by serving on committees, boards, etc., as assigned to ensure the independent living philosophy is represented.
Participate in public policy advocacy.
Maintain required job skills and core professional competencies.
Attend and actively participate in required educational programs and staff meetings.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Education/Experience Required
Understanding of the independent living/disability rights movement.
Associate's degree or equivalent life/work experience.
Knowledge of current teaching techniques for students with disabilities.
Knowledge of IEPs.
Excellent communication skills.
Excellent organizational skills.
Spanish speaking and writing skills a plus
American Sign Language skills are a plus
Unique Job Functions
Ability to travel within the Will and Grundy county areas and beyond as assigned/required.
Ability to work weekends/evenings as required.
Direct experience working with persons with disabilities or personal experience with a disability.
Acceptance of the independent living movement/philosophy required.
Work Remotely
Pay: $19.00 - $20.00 per hour
