Job Summary
Health Educators will deliver structured, developmentally appropriate lessons to seventh- and eighth-grade students in Halifax County middle schools. The program is being developed in partnership with the UNC INSPIRED Lab and community stakeholders, including students, parents, educators, healthcare professionals, mental health clinicians, and state and local partners. The intervention will be piloted, refined, and compared with the evidence-based Botvin LifeSkills Training program. Selected educators will receive initial training, weekly coaching, and ongoing supervision from the UNC INSPIRED Lab team.
Responsibilities
- Deliver substance-use prevention and mental-health lessons to seventh- and eighth-grade students.
- Prepare instructional materials and become familiar with assigned lesson plans before each session.
- Establish a welcoming, respectful, culturally responsive, and age-appropriate learning environment.
- Facilitate student discussions, activities, and skill-building exercises.
- Follow the intervention curriculum and implementation procedures with fidelity.
- Assist students and families with completing required study forms when directed by the research team.
- Support pre-intervention and post-intervention data-collection activities.
- Complete attendance records, fidelity checklists, session notes, and other required documentation.
- Participate in initial training and weekly coaching or supervision meetings.
- Communicate regularly with Rural Health Hub supervisors, school personnel, and the UNC INSPIRED Lab team.
- Follow all confidentiality, research ethics, school safety, and youth-protection requirements.
- Participate in a focus group or provide implementation feedback when requested.
- Travel between participating schools within Halifax County.
- Complete other reasonable duties associated with successful program implementation.
Qualifications
- An associate degree, bachelor’s degree, or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience in public health, health education, education, social work, counseling, psychology, nursing, youth development, human services, or a related field.
- Experience working with middle school students, adolescents, schools, families, or community-based programs.
- Strong communication, facilitation, and relationship-building skills.
- The ability to present sensitive topics in an age-appropriate, nonjudgmental, and engaging manner.
- The ability to follow a structured curriculum and complete documentation accurately.
- Dependability and availability during school-day hours.
- Reliable transportation to participating Halifax County schools.
- The ability to complete required background checks, training, and organizational onboarding requirements.
